the unfortunate part of that is at 2:30 when it gets hot and everyone turns on their A/C unit the power can drop and you may blow the compressor.. It is just one of those facts of RVing you can pay your money now or you can pay it later.. consider it like playing Russian Roulette.

We could play "what ifs" all day long. I make a point not to tell people what they should & should not purchase and I suggest you do the same.

BTW, I have the extended warranty for that very reason.

Peace & have a great day.

While that's possible it's more likely the compressor will unload (depending on design) or trip a breaker before it's damaged. Motor torque drops by the square of the voltage drop. As motor voltage drops amperage is going up, torque down. And it's a pretty steep curve, both amps and torque. You might lose a run capacitor before you trip something but even that is unlikely. Air conditioners can withstand "brownouts" and do all the time. I don't have voltage protection at home but I have seen the lights flicker when the compressor cycles, that indicates you are in brownout.

I also chose the Progressive Industries 30 Amp Protection System. It's pretty expensive yes, but an RV is a pretty big investment as well. It allows me to sleep a little better

I just bought this Technology Research 30a surge/over/under/polarity w/ digital display for $155. I could not argue with the price... and it shipped very quickly! Had it in less than a week.

LOVE the built in amp meter. Was nice to see what component pulled what during my maiden voyage this past weekend.

My 50a TRC 34750 tripped today during a lightning storm. The MW is toast. I called TRC and they said it is not repairable.
Not a happy camper right now.

I just installed the Progressive Industries 30 amp hardwired model. At the same time I converted the trailer's cable to a quick disconnect. In my trailer all off this is located inside the fixed table in the rear. Stuffing the cable thru the mouse hole in the back was a real pain. The PI is an electrical management system (EMS) which will shut down if the voltage gets too high or too low. Mine has a led monitor that is mounted external to the EMS and shows any error codes, the amps being drawn, the voltage and the frequency (60 cycles PS).

I called PI because I thought my unit was putting out a little more heat than I liked and was expertly taken thru measuring the impedance of the coil that keeps the contacts closed allowing current to flow thru the device. He was very helpful.

Eight years ago, we pulled into a state park in the middle of the night. The loop that included our site had been completely renovated including new electrical boxes and loop breakers. We were the first to camp in the site after the renovation. The wiring was backwards and the electric post caught on fire as well as our electric cord to the RV. Our cord was melted to what was left of the box and burned to within two feet of our RV. We spent the rest of the trip with the state electricians, local electricians and state park staff trying to figure out what was damaged in the RV. The first purchase with our new RV was portable surge protector that checks voltage, surges, etc. at Camping World and have used it on every trip. It's tripped a couple of times during storms.

It will be the first thing we plug in when we receive our new 2015 31.5 RLTS next week! We're new to the Jayco family and can't wait for delivery!

Not Repairable

TRC notified me that my 34750 unit was not repairable. Made in Houduras and not economical to return. They offered a discount on a 34850 new unit. Lightning caused a power surge destroying the Surge Protector and also my microwave.

I bought a Progressive PT-50C, I hear it is repairable.

Do buy one, keep an eye on Camping World specials. I bought a 50 amp portable for $200 back in the spring at CW in Mesa, AZ. The "regular" price in the flyer is $450. so you can get a deal.

I have the EMS-PT50C and I'm so paranoid about shore power issues that I have a second one still in the box as a spare. I have seen way too many RV's damaged by power issues after 5 years of full time RV living. My EMS-PT50C has been in continuous service for 4 1/2 years and the spare will be put in service when the primary one has to go back to Progressive for warranty service.

I purchased the portable 30A EMS system several months ago. Within a week weather events blew it up. Progressive Industries had me send it back (my expense) and about a week later it was returned. Several days ago I see it displaying a previous error code indicating that an Over power situation occurred and it shut itself down.

So it works and progressive industries stand behind their product.

and so it goes,,,,, TRC does not stand behind their product unless it is within the warranty period. It can not be repaired per my experience.
