Electrical hookups

Picking up my first rv in December and riding down to Florida. In the interim I'm reading a lot of manuals and gradually acquiring the accessories I'll need. Next up is the electrical hookup; how long, surge protector or not, what brands are high quality and anything else you think a new guy should know about the electrical end of rving. Thanks, rick

Your RV should come with a power cord..maybe 20-30'. Depending on the TT you got will depend on 30 or 50 amp.. Yes to surge protector. Also get a polarity/volt test unit to test the campsite power prior to plugging in your trailer.. Extra fuses.

Get a progressive industries ems unit. It will protect your trailer from pedestal electrical issues.

I would definitely consider an electrical management system such as Progressive Industries EMS. These provide protection for a variety of conditions that a surge protector doesn't such as high/low voltage/frequency, open ground, polarity, etc. Having a smaller trailer I use a portable model but if you have room you can also get a hard-wired model so it doesn't disappear on you.

I'd also recommend a dogbone adapter. These come in handy if one of the outlets isn't working or is perhaps too loose.

Also, find out what kind and size of fuses are used for the 12V system and make sure to have spares on hand for those as well.

Shut the breaker off before plugging in. Hook up and then turn back on.

I "off" the main house breaker, "off" the pedestal breaker and plug in. "On" the pedestal and check the EMS status and then "on" the house breaker.
