extended warranties

We're finalizing a deal on a new Jayco 23m and naturally one of the things that comes up when you sit down with the finance manager is the extended warranty. We have been offered two plans, one that continues for 3 years after the Jayco 2 year warranty period expires and another one that continues for 5 years after the Jayco warranty expires. Both plans are over $2000.00. Now, we're not full-timers and for the next five years until we both retire from our full-time jobs we would likely only be using the trailer for a total of 3 to 4 weeks per year. So, we're wondering if this kind of usage would justify getting this kind of protection. Oh yeah, the plans pretty much cover all things mechanical, i.e., heating, refrigeration, A/C, slide, plumbing, hitch, fresh water system, waste system, all LP lines and fittings, suspension, and audio-video components. The plans also include roadside assistance, towing, trip interruption compensation, and food spoilage compensation. Do any of you have such a warranty and what do you think of these plans?

You will get varying opinions on this, but mine is stick the 2 grand in your pocket and forget the ex. warranty. Many of them do not protect against the # 1 enemy of RV`s, which is leaks and the ensuing damage from them.

It's your personal preference, some say get it, some say keep your money.

We were quoted almost twice that on are new 5th wheel and we decided not to get it. We did purchase additional coverage on are heat pump and refrigerator through the manufacture fairly reasonably.

We thought about it and decided to pass. We decided to see if any problems would be covered by the 2 year warranty and take our chances after that.

So far we have not regretted it.

Extended warranties are a cash grab, IMHO.

Right now, my trailer is in getting a new black tank valve and cable assembly, under warranty. It is two months past the two year warranty period and Jayco is still fixing it for free.

extended warranties

Agree with others that the extended warranty is likely just lost money. Only exception for me was that I did get the extended warranty on my new diesel F350 covering me to 200,000 miles because as I understand it the HD Diesel engines and transmissions can cost an absolute fortune to repair. Otherwise, I forego extended warranty options.

It'd just free $$$ for the dealer and a nice commission for the FO. We bought the Good Sam ext. warranty at the end of our two years, very affordable, with good coverage.

extended warranties

With any insurance it's obviously a better risk to not buy. Otherwise it wouldn't be profitable for them to sell.

I would keep the money and skip the ext warranty, you'd be better off putting the 2grand in a savings account just in case something should need fixed.
I was actually surprised when we bought our new Starcraft, they did not even offer/push an extended warranty, was actually impressed by that.

Do a search here in the forums...there are tons of threads about extended warranties. Personally, I did purchase one. Mine was around $1200 for seven years. I like the peace of mind it gives me.

Put the money you would spend on the warranty in a bank account to pay any future claims. Most problems will show up BEFORE the 2 year Jayco warranty expires.
As a side note my buddy was an adjuster for an RV ins company.. he was fired for approving too many JUSTIFIED warranty claims. It just shows they dont want to pay out.

We did purchase a 7year service plan on our WhiteHawk from the dealer (Orlando RV). Yes, it was expensive, no, it wasn't pushed by the F&I guy. Matter of fact he did a pretty good job of explaining the coverage beyond the slick brochure content and it does cover more than the appliances and electronics; it appears to be quite comprehensive. The plan is underwritten/administered by National Interstate, a company that has provided insurance services and products to the industry for a number of years. Hope we never need it but it's there if we do.

Just last week, we received info. in the mail from Jayco about 'their' extended service plan. Less expensive than the plan we bought from the dealer, but for a shorter term. It is also underwritten and administered by a company I'm not familiar with. Not to say they are not a solid company, but I've never heard of them.

If an owner has the resources to self insure, an extended plan might not be needed, but we viewed the cost of the trailer and the potential for expensive systems or structural problems as reason enough to buy one.

I would add my vote to skip the extended warranty and save your $$. As stated above, if it really benefitted the buyer at the expense of the dealer or insurance company, it would not be offered. JMHO

I got the extended warranty with my trailer. Normally I wouldn't as I fix things myself but I had the money and it was the first brand new thing I'd bought in ages. They also gave me a better price on the trailer if I got the warranty. In 6 years I'll let you know if it was a good idea.

When I bought the trailer I also bought a 2003 Expedition for a local used car dealer. For some unknown reason I agreed to a 2 year warranty for $700. That one paid off as 2 weeks ago the fuel pump went and they paid $880 of the $1200 bill.

Don't let anyone pressure you into buying one but if it makes you more comfortable then maybe it's worth it.

We weren't offered an extended warranty when we purchased our TT. This past August, Jayco sent an offer in the mail to us for an extended warranty beyond the 2yr mfg warranty. This offer was for another 5yrs of protection for $1500. There was a $500 deductible. This wasn't worth it to us. I contacted our dealer about this and they were also on the same page as us. They stated that outside of the refrigerator and the air conditioner, parts would typically be less than $500 and labor wasn't covered under the extended warranty. I work in the HVAC industry so repairing the fridge and A/C would be right up my alley. We own a 197 so there isn't really any complicated systems.....maybe the slide but so far it has worked fine......I hope I didn't jinx myself...

Warranties are a gamble in my opinion, someone wins and someone loses.

we did the extended warranty. they gave us the 7 year for the 5 year price. With 2 kids and a dog we wanted a little more insurance. The amount of our monthly payment was not that much of a difference, maybe $10-$15 dollars I think. It is a give and take when you are negotiating the prices. It all works out for the dealer, but if anything goes wrong I HOPE it will be covered...I think you can also transfer it if you do sell it.

we went with it on ours when we got it i think it was about 2300 bucks, but if we dont use it in the 5 years after the manufacturer warranty they give us 2000 back so i figured it was a good choice for us
