Extended Warranty

Please excuse me for a long rant, but this concerns Canadians who have or will purchase an extended warranty from "First Canadian Protection Plans".

I am down here in Yuma AZ where it is very hot right now and my A/C quit working. I purchased my warranty in 2007 and have never had the need to use it. I was told that at the end of the warranty period if I did not use it I would be getting a substantial rebate.

I never used this warranty but did phone the company last summer and was told my warranty was good until Aug. 2015 and I never thought any more about it until my A/C went out and gave them a call to set up a claim if needed. It turns out it was only a capacitor that did not cost much to replace.

I was told by FCPP that my warranty was expired last August but I had not received any notice of this and was told it was in the fine print about giving them 60 days notice to get the rebate.
There is apparently no record of a phone call to them or so they tell me. I then phoned my dealer and they couldn't care less. I don't think the finance guy was happy with my response to him. Lets put it this way I was rather disappointed in myself, but that's life I guess.

I paid close to 3 grand for this warranty and why would I not make a claim for rebate if I knew the rules? My long rant is to let prospective buyers that if it sounds to good to be true it usually is. I can't say this is a scam but........

Thanks for the heads up. Makes me feel more confident in passing it up when we picked up our unit last month. Funny - they never mentioned the 60 day clause to us either. The rebate itself seemed a bit scammy to me - basically encouraging you not to make a claim unless it was worth more than 2k (which was the rebate amount for me, $3,800 total).

Which dealership if you don't mind sharing? I bought at Fraserway in Airdrie.

If you can't get out of the extended warranty, take some time to read the fine print and follow the instructions to the letter.

It was Field of RV Dreams, just west of Calgary, they are now south of the city.

Extended warranties are nothing but a FRAUD. These companies don't make money by paying out claims..

I'm not Canada but I will never buy an extended warranty for anything. I figure with all the money I have saved over the years by not purchasing the warranty when something does break down I'll pay for it but still have saved thousands. We just purchased a TT and the finance lady was upset wasn't getting the warranty, I guess she's used to people just signing up and her getting her percentage.

Albertaguy. Not to worry, if you have to make a claim the company will show it to you! [emoji33]

Are you able to push the issue? Perhaps as far as small claims if need be....

I will wait until I am home which will be early April and then I will see what I can do. I might try the secret shopper route and price shop the dealer as I doubt anyone will remember me at the dealer and go from there.

I'm not being smart with you, just saying the devil is in the details and they will try and get out of paying a claim citing some detail in the agreement that allows them to deny your claim.
