Extended warranty

Anyone have good advice on a extended warranty? Are they worth it or not? I've read many article and it's hard to come to a definite conclusion. Most I've personally talked to that has purchased them said they've recovered pennies on the dollar if any of the cost. Or it's not worth the fight to try to collect when the time arises. I ended up canceling mine, it wasn't easy to get that done. I didn't like it when I was told the warranty and extended warranty work together. Basically, trying to convince me without the extended warranty I had nothing. So I guess I will see if that's true? So if anyone has a purchased a good one, please post.

I went with Good Sam. I called my dealer's service department and asked if they had positive dealings with Good Sam and they said they had no problems working w/ them. I also liked that I could pay annually with no interest instead of all at once.

I use my cash rebate from my Amex to pay the annual Good Sam bill. It always covers it, so I never 'feel' it. And I sleep better knowing I've got 5 additional years of protection.

Your new Jayco has a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty.. If something goes wrong it will likely happen in that time.. Remember these warranty companies make money by NOT paying out on claims..

My advice take the money you would spend on an extended warranty put it in a bank account and use that to pay for any problems you might have down the road.. bet you will end up money ahead..

Yes, the original extended was 3450. A few thought i was a little nuts when i told them . My impression is a good sam warranty could be half of that. Is it true that the newer the unit , the lower the price of one.? Or can i wait till the bumper to bumper is up to get one? At the very least i planning on doing a manufacturers on that huge refrig and wing it.

You don't need a dealer for a GoodSam quote. Work one up for yourself and decide:

I purchased a 7 yr extended warranty from Jayco themselves...This is our "retirement camper", thus the reason I purchased extended warranty..IF I have something fixed at my dealer, it's -0- deductible..Any other Jayco dealer, it's a $50 deductible... cost was $2200..pretty simple and it's from Jayco..works for me.

Here in Atlanta we have a "Consumer Advocate" on a local TV station named Clark Howard. Clark and most other consumer advisers rail AGAINST buying any kind of extended warranties or service policies on anything. They point out that these companies have high overhead and administrative costs plus what they pay out in claims. So their prices are set by mathematicians to make sure they make money based on the odds of you're having a problem.

In short, they are just like the Casino's - the odds favor the "house."
They also market based on fear.
Is there a chance you'll have a catastrophic failure that will cost you a fortune? Yep!
Is there a much larger chance you'll buy the policy and not get your money's worth? Yep!

When i bought ours i also bought a extended warranty though jayco for a total of 7 years cost $2000

If you have a reputable dealer and he backs it, yes it's worth it. If from a 3rd party probably not. Most sold by the dealers also cover mobile service if needed, at least mine does. The one I had on the SENECA did as well and I got a partial refund when I traded even though they paid for a new radiator and install.

Mine is 7 years and covers towing of both tv and trailer. Not sure about mobile service though.
But, supposedly, I get my money back if I never use it after 7 years.
I haven't heard anybody talk about that yet when discussing extended warranty.
It was $2000 CAD.

Same is true of any insurance you buy, and in the end that is more of what you are buying.

While it may not be worth it to me, I can see other folks having a different opinion.

I purchased an extended warranty plan when I bought my White Hawk almost two years ago...my first RV. To be honest I did not read it thoroughly and bought it because I wanted to protect my investment. What bothers me the most is that it simply does not cover any water intrusion of any kind, which at least for me, is my worst fear. So fast forward to the present. I am trading the White Hawk in this week and purchasing a Eagle 355MBQS. Although the dealer offered to make the extended warranty whole, thus covering me for five years, I am going to take the cash option of a prorated buy-out on the plan. I will get back $1700 from the $2100 spent. This cash will pay for my 5th wheel hitch and then some.

My dealer is offering a 7-year "extended service plan" for $1500. I'm picking up a 26' JayFeather tomorrow. I paid just about $21000. Around $300/year and this dealer is one of the biggest in California (50 bays).

Any advice??

Congratulations on the new Jay Feather.

Extended warranties have been debated on this forum at least a couple of times. IMO, there has been no definite consensus.
