Extension Cord

I am new to the ring world snd have some basic questions.
Is it necessary to have an extension cord for power hook ups?
Is it necessary to have extra waste hose for different camp grounds?
If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then how long is adequate for most applications?
Thanks
Jack

I carry a 25 foot extension cord with me "Just in case" - I haven't had to use it but I'm one of those "want to have everything I need" type guys. The cord on my RV is already 30 feet long so the chances of me needing another 25 feet are slim.

I carry an extra 25' extension cord just in case because the 50 amp connected cord supplied by Jayco is only 25'. I actually use it when plugged in for storage to keep the batteries up and fridge cold.
The waste hose I carry collapses to about 6' using an accordion style but extends to about 25'
One thing you may want to consider is some campgrounds require the water tight donut (sewer hose seal) style fitting on the end of the waste hose connected to the drain just in case;

In addition to the 30' power cord that comes with the camper, I have another 25' 30A rated extension cord so I could reach my 50Amp outlet on my garage. So far I have not been to a campground that needed more than 30'. I also carry a 50' extension cord, 12 gauge I think, "just in case". I also use an inline surge protector when connected to shore power (camping or otherwise)

I carry a 25' and a 50' hose for water. 25' is enough 9x out of 10.

For sewer I carry a 15' Rhino brand plus another 10' extension. The 10' extension is a recent addition because my 29.5BHDS has the drain much further up the chassis than my last camper and I found the 15' to be a little short in some cases. Your mileage may vary on that one.

On our very first trip we didn't have an extension cord and found we were short so we had to park somewhere less than ideal. After that I bought a 25'. Used it now and then. Next trip to the same campground, different site, and we were STILL short from where we wanted to be so now we have a 30' and a 25', just in case.

I don't have an extension cord but plan to get a 25' one. I do have a 15' sewer hose and a 10' extension that I needed one time. I also carry a 25' drinking hose and an extra 10' drinking hose but have never need to use the 10'. If you plan on using campground cable tv you might also want to carry at least a 25' RG6 coax line with the water-tight connectors.

Quite right, forgot about that one. I carry 2 x 25' coax/RG6 with a mail/mail connector in case I have to go beyond 25'. Like the water hose, most times 25' is enough, but then there's that ONE time lol

A lot depends on where and how you camp. Most of the places we go, extension cords and hoses are not much of a big deal (dry camp often). One place we go periodically, the power pedestals are shared for two sites, so depending on which site you have you will need an extension cord. If you want to use the AC, or microwave, you should have the correct rated cord (30 or 50 amp). If you just want lights and the frig, then you could use a heavy duty extension cord (~12 gauge).

As for hoses, we use one every trip to fill the gravity fill (FW tank). I normally use a short 10 foot hose, it easily reaches the local water spigot. I do carry two 25 ft hoses also. I also carry a water bandit, 90 deg hose elbow, pressure regulator to ensure I do not have ultra high water pressure damaging my water lines inside the TT, if I am connected to city water.

Over time you will learn what you need for the style camping you will do.

Welcome and congrats on the new rig!!!

Because we don't always set up the tt "normal" on the site (when allowed awning to awning when with friends, or maybe 90* to the siege win them) I have 2-25' 30a extension cords, and 160' of fresh water hose. So far I have only needed one 30a cord, but we have used all the hose plus some due to our site not having a water hookup, but 2 sites down did (friends were on that site also, and we had all three together).

Another good option to have is a 50a male to 30a female adapter if you need a 30a plug. I finally bought one and used it the next time out, again due to how we set up camping with friends.

I also run a 90* adapter for the water hose at the trailer, then a pressure regulator.

Enjoy the new rig!!!

I use my 25 foot extension cord because the one built into my trailer will not reach my 30 amp recepticle when it's parked in the street out front. I haven't needed it on camping trips yet, but it has been close.

Regarding sewer hoses, I bought a kit that includes 2 of them with a connector that allows you to make one long hose instead of 2 short ones. Haven't needed to hook both together yet.

Tom, we must think along the same lines. I have all the stuff you mention except the 25' extra power cord for 30 amp. I have never needed more than the 30' cord that comes with the unit. Even at the RV Rally's I have been to the original power cord has always been enough. Sewer hose is a different matter at Rally's. I have the same two pieces of Rhino sewer hose in a 6" pvc vinyl post underneath the rig right next to the sewer outlet. Really convenient.

Yep, and every one was learned the hard way lol

The 30A power cord extension was new add this year. I used to just use the default cord plus a regular extension cord, which was fine to run the fridge and keep the batteries going, but now I can run the entire camper including A/C without worrying about overloading the cord.

Oh and as another person mentioned, a 50A --> 30A cable I would call another must-have, for those rare times a campground only has a 50A site available, OR for when all the other campers are overloading the 30A feed running their A/C's all day, I can plug into the 50A service instead and (in theory) be on a different feed

RV extension about $40 at Wally World\

Good Sewer waste hose about $30-40 at any RV center. The one that came with your RV is trash but good enough for a spare.

You won't need the things on your list until you need the.

The ones that come with them now must totally be garbage, I didn't even get one included with my TT

Just be sure the extension cord has the proper RV 30A connectos on both ends...

google image

When I bought my trailer I saw the dealer had tons of those running all over the place so I just asked if they would throw a couple of those into the trailer.

The salesperson say I have to go to the bathroom. So I was just standing around and she finally came back and saw I was still standing around the couple of 25-foot RV 30A extension cord. She looked at and then looked at the cords and said I got to go to the bath room again.

I finally got the jesture haha..

I layed them in plain view just inside the trailer door and they was there when I brought the trailer home with me...

I have 2 Rhinoflex sewer hoses and use them both frequently. 2 freshwater hoses - normally only need 1, but have used both on one occasion. Have a 50 amp to 30 amp conversion that I use all of the time (had to have it once due to no 30 amp). I don't have an extension cord, but needed one once and had to use a loaner (thankfully they had one).

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the tips contained here. I have a 50amp service and will get a 50amp extension cord. Is it still necessary to get a 50 to 30amp adapter?

Some places may only have 30 amp service and plug configuration limiting the ability to run two A/Cs, microwave, coffee pot, converter, etc, simultaneously. But most everything can be run on 30 amps at the same time when using only one A/C unit.
