F150 Payload... Occupants & Cargo
So... according to my door sticker, I'm allowed 1361 lbs of combined weight. By the time I factor in these approximate numbers, I'm left with only 100lbs for any extras in the cab and box... 3 carseats, diaper bag, snacks etc...
5 Occupants: 400lbs (2 adults, 3 small children)
Fiberglass cap: 150 lbs
Andersen No-sway WDH: 60 lbs
X213 tongue weight: 650 lbs
My plan is to install Roadmaster Active Suspension this Spring... I know this doesn't increase my payload, but it will help stabilise/level the truck. Should I get rid of the cap and use a lighter tonneau cover which would certainly give more breathing room?
Am I missing something? It seems a half ton should easily handle this size of coach. This season, Kids will be big enough where we will be bringing bikes etc...

You're looking at it correctly. 1/2 tons run out of payload way before the run out of tow capacity. Some of the newer Fords w/ the Aluminum have more payload.
If I had to get a truck, I'd definitely order my F-150 w/ Max Tow & Max Payload. You get a nice big truck and you think you're good to go only to get a education that is often times costly.
I'd def lose the cap - every pound counts.

I would think about getting some new tires if you haven't already. Just a hunch but I suspect your weak link in cargo capacity is your passenger tires. Compare your tires load capacity to similar sized LT tires capacity and I think you'll see the LT has a higher rating. It won't change your door sticker but it will help your towing experience and in reality, it should increase your safety buffer.

Yes... tires have been upgraded already... Michelin Defender M/S which are great BTW. Even in Canadian Winters!

I thought my payload on my 2001 F-150 was low at 1,790 lbs. Guess not! Sounds like you have quite a full truck. Any possibility of driving a second vehicle when you go? We take a second vehicle to haul the kids, etc. (simply because my regular cab can't haul a whole family). This allows me to run my truck with limited extra weight. The last time I scaled full camp ready I had about 400 lbs. payload remaining. I'd be way over if I had my family and other supplies packed in the truck.

The more options you have, the less capacity you get. My Dad's newer Limited is at 1155 lbs. All that leather and speakers. Not to mention power running boards.
Travelling with 2 vehicles isn't realistic with us... especially on longer trips.

Makes sense. These half tons do run out of payload pretty quick, especially with all the gadgets and options.. I think if you lost the cap you would be within your capacity. That cap has to weigh a good amount I would think.

I figured around 150 but I think it's closer to 180.

You could also try to haul more 'stuff' inside your TT. This puts the weight on the TT axles, not your truck. Then it becomes towable weight, not payload.
I have a 1/2 Tundra, and a small 17Z. I'm likely maxed out on carrying capacity for both, so I try to just pack lighter. I quickly realized about payload of the truck, and cargo carrying capacity of the small HTT.
The general mentality seems to be "I have a full size truck, I can pack it completely full and it's good to go."

My F150 has a payload of 2013 pounds. We tow a 28BHBE. I still carry as much as I can in the trailer itself to keep a payload cushion...
