F150 You Guys Didn't Tell Me...

... that the F150 I recently purchased that the safety chains would be too short from my White Hawk as Ford put the safety chain loops WAY under the bumper!

Oh, well. Down to the hardware store for 5 (x2) links of chain and new hooks!

Those likely were Chinese made chains, they are known to shrink. Have you checked the trailers wire harness?

Wish mine would shrink a little bit. My old F150 must have the chain connections mounted closer than the newer ones. Lucky me.
BTW...how do you get them to shrink?

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Same here. 2013 Expedition and the chains are a little long if anything.

Give them to my DW and ask her to wash them. She shrinks everything in the dryer...

This is true. I have shirts that look like they may fit a G.I. Joe instead of me. So not only does it have Kung Fu grip, but it also looks better than me.

I noticed too that the chains were too short the first time we were taking our new-to-us out for the first camping trip. Fortunately I already had some heavy duty threaded quick-links that now live permanently on the truck. That adds enough length that the chains reach and don't bind.

And open up so many more issues that you'll have forgotten about any issues you may have with your trailer at all....

Seriously though, all of you guys are better off replacing the entire safety chain in one assembly, rather than adding quick links.
The reason I say this, is that the quick links are OFTEN not a rated chain link, and as such may fail if that dark day comes where you actually need your safety chains.
Safety chains are supposed to be rated to hold the weight (loaded) of your trailer, and being a rather anal retentive person, I would double that.
(8,000lb trailer, minimum 2 chains rated at 4,000lb each, personally Id have two chains rated at 8,000lb each)
The platform hitch might rip out from under the truck, but then that becomes manufacturer liability in the event of a lawsuit, rather than personal liability or your insurance company denying coverage due to negligence.

Yes, but you can buy good quality quick links that are rated, and at fairly high working loads. Just check the package when purchasing to ensure that they are sufficiently stout.

On my last TT I replaced the chain hooks with quick links after breaking one of the hook retainer springs. A well secured link will not come undone and pop off the attachment point.
