Finding water out on the Road

My Wife and I are taking a trip to Florida in mid March and we live in Western New York, So the weather might be real cold when we leave, My question is, Are there gas stations or some place we might be able to find water when we get in a warmer state that I can put in my water tank and "dewinterize", we will be in our 2014 Greyhawk, Thanks Rick

I would do it at the first campground you stop at that has the water on...or a state park

We have been to a number of Pilot/Flying J's and never have seen potable water at the RV islands. We only use the water there to flush the black tank and sewer hoses. Whenever we are on the road, we add an inline water filter to any water supply just to be safe. We are also leaving for Florida in March and live in Northeastern Pa. I will wait for a nice day, "dewinterize", add some fresh water and turn up the heat. That way if there any problems, we will know about it before we leave. Also, we don't put any food such as canned goods or even bottles of ketchup or mustard in until the heat is on. It has been so cold here that I worry about that stuff freezing. Good luck and safe travels,

Fred

I was hoping that Pilot/Flying J would have potable water. It has been real cold in NY too but will also keep an eye on the weather, Thanks for the reply and safe travels to you also !!

You could always stop at a grocery store and buy a few gallons to dump in the tank.

what about rest areas, most of them have water fountains and I am assuming water spigots. If you brought hose with I am assuming they would allow you to get water but I have never tried. Seems like Flying J's are RV Friendly as well and I would assume they would let you get potable water from them if you had a hose. In either case I would use a in line water filter, I use them all the time anyway.

What about a Cracker Barrel, not sure if how many are on the way but I would bet if you stopped for a meal and asked the manager they would let you get some water....

Many city water treatment plants will let you fill up for a couple of bucks...

why are you so worried about add water on the road? why not wait until you get to where you
are going to dewinterize? Carry a couple of gallons of bottled water with you to flush toilet or just
use campground facilities

I'm on the road for 5-7 days at times. Would love to find an easy way to get potable water while traveling.

I have a thought on Pilot/Flying's non potable water, What makes it "non potable" wouldn't it be piped in from there "store" ? I'm sure they wouldn't have a good water pipe and a bad water pipe and decide to connect to bad water pipe ? just a thought...

I live 7 miles away from a Flying J now Pilot. They have had all kinds of problems with the water going to the RV islands. From freezing in the winter to pipes leaking the summer, you name it. They have replaced it on several occasions and still haven't gotten it right. I have gotten to know one of the maintenance people and they told me that none of the water that goes to the RV or truck islands is filtered or treated, hence they have determined that it is non-potable. On more that one occasion, I have used the water there to flush my black tanks and the rust in the water was amazing. I would not use any water from any truck stop for my tanks. Instead, I would pull into a campground for 1 night get my water that way if necessary.

The other thing with water is after I de-winterize, I want to make sure that I don't have any leaks before heading out on the road. I prefer to put the heat on in the RV, De-winerizer, fill with water and check for leaks. I have done this, regrettably, when the temperature was in the 20's. Running water, from the house to the unit won't freeze. If the unit is setup for cold weather camping, that is also not a problem. Just make sure that you disconnect the hose from the hose bib on the house to keep it from freezing and bring the hose in the house and drain it so it won't freeze.

I always carry a folding two wheeled hand cart and a 5-gallon water can. Never know when you need to haul the water a few feet.

We never use our fresh water tanks for potable water- Just for toilets and showers and washing dishes. We bring along bottled water for consumption and cooking... I know there is nothing wrong with using the fresh water tanks for consumption - We just never got into that habit...

Being a fresh ground bean coffee lover we have to have the same water everywhere we go to make our coffee taste we like so just add a few more jugs of bottled water for our consumption...
