First real big trip

We are traveling from St. Louis to the southern rim of the Grand Canyon (travelers village Rv park in AZ) about 1450 miles for a 2week adventure.
Mapping it out it looks like 44 to 40 to 64 with some road changes in Oklahoma City trying to decide which way around Oklahoma City any suggestions would be great.
We are going to leave on a Friday morning and check in time is noon Monday

Not sure how many miles / hours to try and do per day
Going to stay at Koa's and possibly Walmart's parking lots if Koa is not around. Are there any must stop and see along our travels or what to watch out for.
We are going to be in a Chevy 3500 6.6 pulling a Pinnical 5th wheel .
Last yr we pulled a 32' tt to Branson mo then to Bosewell OK
Thanks mike

I suggest you stop by 4 or so before the crowds, or, make reservations. That's about 400 miles a day. There is a KOA at Williams you could stay Sunday eve before you go into the park. Elk city OK, and Clinton OK have route 66 museums, Amarillo RV dealer has an interesting RV museum. Your not going to be stopping much on your way there. Traveling at 60 MPH with fuel food 400- 450 is a nice comfortable drive. Not a lot in New Mexico, open space and lots of it. Get a KOA value card if your going to spend more than a few nights, get 10% discount and earn points toward future stays.

Have fun and enjoy the country !

Don't forget casino campgrounds. They make great overnight stops. NM has 3 along I 40, west of Albuquerque were under $20 for full hookups. It is getting warmer out here in the west so you may need hookups to run your a/c at night. Just a thought.

44 to 40 was easy for us during that leg coming from OH to CA. I can't remember the road name, but we took the northern loop around OK City and did fine pulling the Seismic. We tend to stay at truck stops, so don't know about KOAs. I find them too costly for sleeping stops.

When you come into OKC on I44 take the Kilpatrick Turnpike around the northern side of OKC. It will take you around OKC and all of the congestion then drop you right on I40. Perfect road for pulling a camper.

Enjoy.

Don't know about your interest or schedule, but while that close to OK City, I highly recommend visiting The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. My wife and I visited The National Memorial but not the Museum. You can devote as much or as little time there as you wish, but well worth a stop imho. Safe travels!!

Years back we often did all nighters and a 15 hour+ day now and again was not unheard of. Getting too hard to do that now. 12 hours is my limit, though we'll be doing a straight shot from Milwaukee to Gatlinburg in Sept, so we'll see how that goes.

My dad was an over the road trucker when I was a kid. When we started taking long trips he told me to plan 2 hours for every 100 miles. That seems to work out well as a basis for planning. That said our Gatlinburg trip will put us over 13 hours. You just have to decide what you can tolerate. It's not a race, do what works best for you.

That's my "rule of thumb" as well (2hr/100mi). I've done 12 hr drives a couple of times and will try to avoid at all costs. Last time we did it I felt like I'd been beaten with a bat. 8 is about enough for me maybe a little more but not much.

A word of advice about trailer village in the south rim of Grand Canyon. They are run by a concession outfit. Not by the park service. You have paid with credit card I assume. When you go there, make sure that you pay only with a credit card and not cash!! We were there in February an stayed several days. When I went to settle up for our stay, I asked if I could pay cash instead of putting it on my credit card. The response was that I could pay cash and the credit card was just to guarantee for the first day. I paid in cash. Two days later two separate charges showed up on my credit card for our stay. I called repeatedly and was told it would be straitened out. It never was credited to my card. Bottom line is, don't trust them. They are some new outfit out of New Jersey I think. They were clearly over there heads with check ins. While I was checking in two different families came in to say that someone else were in there assigned spot. They were complaining about a new computer that was causing the problem. Watch them close!!!

While coming thru ARIZONA ON 40, TRY THE PAINTED DESERT, meter crater and pertified(sp) forest. All are a short drive from 40, have good roads, info building, etc. Meter crater exit has a very nice rv park, gas sta, quick stops. Like others have said, there are about four casinos btw albq and flag. Cheap, full hook ups, and most will provide a free shuttle to casino.

That's good advice cuz I've gone the South route around OKC (stayed at Twin Fountains RV Park) and the road condition is really, really bad!
