Frame Rust

My trailer is only 8 months old, has never been driving in salt but the frame rust is already terrible. I can't believe how thin the factory e-coat is. What is the general consensus on a long term product? Por-15?

It would be nice if Jayco Powder Coated them like some of the other manufactures.. but then again $$$$. I just keep a close watch on the normal areas and sand blast it, prime and repaint.. a yearly project.. and it is time to check again. Thanks

I've noticed this as well on almost all brand TT's in the same price range. I looked at a keystone Springdale that had been on the dealer lot for about 10 months. When I looked underneath I couldn't believe how bad the rust was. The dealer actually brushed it off as no big deal and said they'd repaint it. My new Jay flight will be permanently located just a 1/4 mile from the ocean and this is a big concern for me. I've actually been looking at products to treat the frame with. I agree in that they should powdercoat these things. I know I'd pay extra for a powdercoated frame.

I use Por 15 all the time on my vehicles. Works great and I do not see why it wouldn't work just as well on your trailer frame. It is expensive but certainly a worthwhile investment.

Our Greyhawk had rust on several frame members as noted in this post and the one immediately following it. Our dealer sanded and repainted the frame under warranty last winter. I am keeping an eye on it and no rust has reappeared.

I will try to have this fixed under warranty too. It's not right that it's rusting this badly so quickly. My 1986 Fleetwood had less rust on it.

I just bought a Continental cargo trailer which is made in the same factory as Forest River and it's rusting quickly too. It's really sad how poor the quality is on products now.

Even though you have never towed it in the snow, they are manufactured in Indiana, it snows there, and someone had to pull it to your dealer. We have learned to look at the build date on the sticker to ensure it was not towed in the snow.

Complain to your dealer. When I told them about it they initially said it wouldn't be covered under warranty. I told them to run it past Jayco and they did. To their surprise Jayco approved sanding down and repainting the frame, jacks and other parts. Worth a try.

I am a couple hundred yards from the Gulf of Mexico and do not have any issues out of the ordinary. I drove and parked my 65 Mustang here for 18 years and it was OK. The parts that I have issues with are where the welds are, as they (frame mfr) probably welded the frame and put it outside in the elements and after a few weeks brought it into their shop painted over the slight surface rust and sent it to Jayco. Needless to say, after 6 months the rust shows through the paint.

If you ever go to a rv factory, the bare frames are stacked outside like firewood.

Inspection, cleaning and spraying are regular maintenance items. My rig has few rusts spots and when I find on, it's wire brushed and sprayed with rustoleum.

I would be interested in what products are used by others. I have heard of some using the spray on bedliner material but I have not seen a need for it on mine.

VHT frame and chassis paint is what we use. I usually wait until I get enough area needing attention to justify my time redoing. Just redid back bumper, mounts and part of rear frame. They had painted straight over chunks of rust.

I think any descent paint is fine. Rustoleum is in my cabinet as well.

I might be a little hesitant to use that stuff as it would not show what is going on underneath it for a year or two and could cause more problems. Just my thoughts

I had similar rust problems.
I sanded down the back bumper and resprayed it with multiple coats of black paint.
I removed the stabilizers, sanded them down, coated with 2 coats of DOM16 (a product similar to POR15), then coated with automotive undercoating, then a couple of coats of black paint.
For the tongue I sanded down and coated with 3 coats of black DOM16.

So far no rust showing again.

If these treatments work OK I'll tackle the frame next summer.

I have sprayed the parts of the frame I can get to with WD40 after every wash and sometimes more often than that. It has kept the frame from rusting thus far. It may not be the best solution but it has worked for me.

Part of my annual maintenance is touching up paint. Wire brush and rattle can style. It's quick and easy.

I definitely understand that this is a maintenance issue but I think it's almost robbery that we are even paying for the paint on these frames. In my opinion it should last at least 2yrs before any major rust begins. I feel like my brand new trailer already looks 10yrs old.

I would love to see some pictures of how bad the rust is on some of these new trailers.

As for materials, I like POR 15. As for anything you put on the rusty metal, if you do not do the prep work, it will come back.

I went on a trip from MD to OH a couple of weeks ago for a bit of a family emergency - all along the way, I saw many transports (you can tell cause the type of TV doesn't match the TT, nose up or down, being towed at high speeds) and every one of them was covered top to bottom in salt and chemicals... made me glad we bought ours in the middle of summer and it was towed when the weather was good!
