Freezer Smell - please help!!

Had to move the RV to do some digging for French drains around the house. Kept the propane on so the frozen meat in the freezer would be OK but forgot about the possibility of the battery dying (drains took much longer than we thought) soooooooo -- how do I get rid of the rotten meat smell in the freezer?

We did this a few years back for our garage freezer after a power outage. Take a large bottle of 'pure' vanilla and put it in a bowl and then put the bowl in the freezer and close the door. Leave the freezer closed without opening it for 3-4 days. The smell was gone, it sure amazed me.

I did read about the vanilla so I have a bowl of it in there now. We have a trip planned for this weekend so I may just have to deal with it better when we get back. The camper doesn't smell - just when we open the freezer and that isn't too unbearable (already cleaned it with vinegar, bleach, water, baking soda) so we shall just have to open it quickly and run! Thanks for the tips!

open can of coffee grounds....
regular newspapers crumpled up...
Arm and Hammer opened up...

If there is any fluids captured be sure to wipe up all you can...

I was hoping for a freezer catch tray but could not find one on mine...

It will eventually go away...

First clean it thoroughly with a bleach-based cleaner. Twice!

Take the shelves and bins out. Rinse completely. Air dry.

No odors after that!

I went thru a similar experience. I spoke with a woman who cleans RVs for a dealer by where I live. She gave me the same advise as Roy mentioned. Clean the freezer well than lots of fresh ground coffee and newspaper. The newspaper absorbs the orders and the coffee neutralizes the smell. It worked better than I ever thought it would. For the next month or so, every time I opened the freezer
I got the great smell of fresh ground coffee.

Update on Freezer smell

We were going camping the weekend it happened so it had to wait until we returned. Of course I had cleaned everything up before we left, and I put a bowl of vanilla in overnight before we left. I also put baking soda in the freezer and fridge.

When we returned I changed out the baking soda and put a bunch of crumpled newspapers with a pile of coffee grounds in the middle of the freezer. Left it sit for over a week. When I opened it there was a coffee smell of course, so I cleaned out the newspapers and the coffee grounds. Left it sit for another week. Opened it up today and NO SMELL!! YAY!!

Thanks for all the help!

I use crumpled up newspaper as well. After every camping trip, first, I turn the unit off, remove the items out of the freezer and fridge, then I wipe and dry it down. Leave the doors open. Come back the next day, place crumpled up newspaper in both and shut the doors. The paper stays in until we decide to go camping again, then I remove it and restock. Nice and fresh!

I have the same process as Campit, but instead of newspaper, I use DampRid. Works like a charm, although newspaper is probably much cheaper.
