Fresh water tank drain valve

Has anyone found a good alternative to the plastic fresh water tank drain valve that manufacturers use? The plastic one gets harder to turn and eventually seizes after a few years.

I had one go bad on my last trailer and replaced with brass shutoff ball type shut off from Menards. Don't know exact description but it had a bayonet end that fit into the plastic pipe and secured with a automotive type strap clamp.

Looked pretty much like this one at Home depot

The one on my trailer is getting hard to move and this is compounded by the fact that you have to stand on your head to get at it. Guess it's time to extend the pipe and put a ball valve on it.

RogerR, great idea. Menards is only a few miles away so I will stop the next time I go past the store. I am also considering putting a valve on the overflow tube to stop the water loss when travelling. I do travel with a full fresh water tank when we know we won't have water hookups at our destination.

I had a rock come up while traveling and broke the plastic valve right off. Emptied my whole tank. I put another plastic one on and fastened a metal cover over it so it won't happen again.
I will look at a different valve when this one wears out.

did you ever put that valve on your overflow tube? Did it stop your water loss?

This'll show you what I did to the overflows on our TT. There's two, because we have two tanks. Just to let you know, this thread's a little old, and the OP may or may not still be active.

It seems that we're getting newbies that don't look at the date of the OP, and just jump in years later, thinking that the OP will respond.

These work real good for a replacement nice handle to get a hold on. Thinking about replacing all my plastic ones with these:

My goal was to move the valve so I could just reach under the TT to drain the tank. I just installed a 1/2 inch brass ball valve as my plastic driain valve was stuck; I had to use pliers to move it. I ran the tubing to the side of the TT and mounted the ball valve (enclosed in a PVC pipe) to one of the flat aluminum support bars. Then I covered tubing with pipe insullation. This is way over kill but I was just having fun. Now all I have to do is relocate the "low point drain" decal.

Thank you for posting your cure for valve replacement. At the end of our last camping trip I attempted to open the fresh water drain and ended up with the plastic handle in my hand. Using a pair of pliers I was able to open it , but wanted to replace the valve.

I looked at the 1/4 turn valve from HD. I also found a similar 1/4 turn valve at amazon that was a bit lower in price and had a better delivery than HD.

It arrived today and it took me more time to gather and put away the tools than it did to remove the old and install the new valve. I didn't have to drill any holes and reused the existing screws and worm drive clamp. I heated the existing tubing end with a cup of really hot water and it slipped right on. It even has a blue handle indicating that is on the cold water line.
