Fridge cooling in hot weather

I have read several posts on the RV.net site about various mods to help the fridge keep cooler in hot summer weather. We are going on a long trip this summer that will take us in to some very hot climates. I have read where some manufacturers install fans in the chimney area at the rear of the fridge in the outside compartment. So, can anyone here tell me if Jayco does this on their Eagle Superlite trailers? I'm sure I can find out from Jayco or even doing a little exploratory in the compartment but I just thought I'd check here and see if any of you knew one way or the other. If not, then I plan on adding a couple of computer type 12 volt fans to the upper vent area to pull more air up the chimney and over the cooling fins.

Our trailer came with one mounted near the top of the chimney. Our fridge is in the slide out and I suspect that is why we have it. The fan comes on automatically when the temp reaches 90 degrees. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the fan noise. Strike another mod off the list.

My 5'er has one cooling fan. My refrigerator is in a slide also. About a month ago I heard the fan making a bit of noise. It seems it was starting to fail after almost 3 years of full time service. It was replaced under my extended warranty and cost me $75.00.

This isn't a standard computer cooling fan. It is much larger and lists for $124.00.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to get my head far enough in the compartment today in the daylight and see that indeed there is a fan about mid-way up the chimney. Looks like about a 4 inch fan. I will trust for now that that will move enough air up the chimney and over the fins to keep things sufficiently cool. I did order 2 different fans for the inside of the fridge last night. one is battery powered by Valtera and the other is from an Ebay vendor that clips on the fins inside the box and circulates the air in the unit. Will keep the one I like best and give the other to my brother-in -law or some other deserving individual.

I ordered the clip on fan this past winter. It took a little bit of work to install it, but it was not bad. I made a connector adaptor to wire it into the Frig’s 12V power supply, keeping the OEM setup if I would want to remove it in the future or disconnect it for any reason.

Fridge cooling in hot weather

+1 on the internal fan. I start the fridge up several days before I got out and use the internal fan and I no longer have any issues at all.

I run 2 110V muffin fans at the top of the chimney and plug them into the fridge outlet behind the access panel. I also have the teeny clip-on microprocessor fans inside the fridge on the heat sink fin thingy. Both items have drastically improved performance.

If I use the 12volt fan I hope to tap into the wire supplying power to the interior light door switch.

That's basically what I did...., tapped into the plug-in connector at the frig light fixture.

I have the Ebay 12v fan. In my '12 TT we have the Norcold fridge and couldn't get the power from inside the fridge. The switch isn't mechanical but magnetic and no access to the constant side. I ultimately fished a wire down the drain hose to pick up 12v at the back of the unit.

I installed 12v computer fan at rear of my 2006 Jayco TT's fridge as well. Simple plastic pull ties to hold it in place. Added manual switch and inline 12V fuse. Works great. Glad to read this behind the fridge extra cooling fan is now factory build in many newer year models.

Note: If installing your own fan, do install a manual off/on switch as well. Thus, turning off at night - when the wife's elephant ears wants to sleep. LOL!!! Happy wife = happy life!!!
