Fuse on battery?

our new jayco has a 30 amp fuse off the battery. we were told to pull this in storage to prevent battery drain. however, with the fuse pulled and tv disconnected, all the 12v stuff still runs?

what gives?

is something wired incorrectly? or am i missung something?

If your Travel Trailer (TT) is still plugged into the Travel Vehicle (via trailer connection) - or plugged into a 120V power....the 12V system will still function without a battery connected.

This is simplified block diagram of your trailer 30AMP power system. As you can see both the Trailer Converter/Charger unit and the Battery feed the Power Distribution Panel which is the heart of your trailer power distribution. This panel allows your trailer's most critical components/appliances to be powered up by 120VAC shore Power or directly from the Battery when camping off the power grid.

If you have pulled the Battery cable protection fuse that is located next to the battery while the trailer is still connected to shore power 120VAC then the 12VDC items will still be powered up by the trailer on-board converter/charger unit...

Don't misplace this fuse as when you are connected to shore power the on-board converter/charger will not be able to keep your battery charged up with this fuse removed.

Fuse on battery?

The trailer was not connected to shore power or the tv. With the fuse pulled I still had power from the battery

I do not have a elec tongue jack so its not for something else.

What is this fuse supposed to protect? Should it be on the pos or neg?

How many wires connected to the + side of the battery? The fuse should be on the + side and there should only be one wire unless there is a direct + line to the break-away switch.

I have 3 wires to the + side. Breakaway switch (which by-passes the fuse), tongue jack and main power to the 12v distribution box (last 2 are in-line with the 30A fuse). Pulling my 30A fuse shuts down the trailer 100% except for the breakaway. It sounds like your 30A fuse is bypassed (which I'd say defeats the point of the fuse) or the fuse holder is defective (shorted). You can verify the latter by disconnecting the battery and pulling the fuse then use a VOM to check for continuity from the + side of the fuse to the ground wire (or trailer frame). Should be an open circuit. Which TT and year do you own? Let the group know what you find.

Take it to the dealer and have them resolve the problem which is likely to be some kind of a wiring issue. Otherwise you have just discovered a magical way to create power. TT's don't run on their own. To prove my point, get a wrench and disconnect the [+] battery cable from the terminal. This will disconnect your battery from the TT power grid. Confirm that the shore power cord is not connected and that the TV is not connected. If you still have 12v then there is another battery somewhere which would have to be a previous owners modification.

Not sure what OP has, but I have 2012 267BHS with same issue. Pulling fuse has no effect on power to trailer and I am not connected to shore power. I will check for defective fuse holder. Thanks.

If you have 12V power after pulling the what you believe to be the battery fuse and you are not connected to shore power or your TV there are only two possibilities: 1) You are not pulling the right fuse OR 2) There is another battery in play.

On my 2014 there are 3 wires coming from the battery. One is a thin orange wire that goes directly to the breakaway switch. One is a thin green wire with a fuse in line - that connects to two thin black wires; one for the tongue jack and the other goes to a black electrical box on the front of the frame. The 3rd wire is a thick white wire that also goes to that same electrical box.

Fuse on battery?

Tnchuck

There is not another battery. I am not connected to shore. This is the only fuse there.

I am going to trace wiring next chance I get. My guess is that this fuse controls the exterior running nights etc. that's the only thing I didn't verify still had power.

BTW, I just disconnect the positive side of the battery when I put mine into storage each time. Easy enough to do, and no issues yet!

Fuse on battery?

That's what I did this time. Pulled the battery all the way. Granted we use it ever two or so weeks. So the lp and stuff wouldn't kill it.

There should be a fuse should be on the #10 white wire which is the main power wire for the TT. You may have other wires with fuses for whatever reason but the #10 white is the main wire. Larry. ps there should NOT be a fuse on the breakaway switch wire

The white wire is the ground (negative) wire. It should go to the frame and should not have a fuse. The positive terminal will have the fuse. The standard color is black but may times the fuse holder wires may be another color.
