It's metal on metal, so grease it. You grease the bearings right, metal on metal.

I use a small can of motorcycle chain lube. It's in a spray and works good.

My grampa taught me to grease 40 years ago, and it makes sense to me. I don't use a lot of grease, but if rust ever shows up I clean and very lightly regrease with white lithium. I store the hitch ball and carrier in a plastic bag which reapplies the grease.

Can never understand those folks who leave their hitch ball permanently installed and the ball is thick with rust; must be impossible to hitch up and I imagine makes an unholy racket when they do get hitched.

This weekend a rig parked in the site next to us. Made a big racket through camp. As he was unhooking, I was walking past, and noticed he was pounding on the hitch, to get it to release. Asked if he needed some help, as I did it released. The ball was fully rusted and dry. I recommended applying some grease. I sprayed WD40 on the ball!

Then again, you could opt for a Stainless Steel ball. Grease would help that too, but it won't rust if you don't! 10 years on mine, never greased, used for a boat - still has the mirror finish.

Been using this stuff on anything that slides or moves easy to apply and dries on

Use this on semi 5th wheel plates , find either one works good.

This post is very interesting. I've had a boat for 15 years and a camper since 02 and I have never greased/lubed the hitch balls...ever. And have never had a problem.

May have to become a greaser!

The ball joints in cars need grease, so it stands to reason this ball joint would also need grease. That is how I look at it.

I grease mine and the smaller balls on the anti-sway bar as well.

I once had a situation where, when disconnecting, my trailer ended up with the tongue buried a foot of dirt. Any one of the several mistakes I made likely would have avoided that from happening, and one of those was that I'd neglected to lube the hitch ball. So in addition to correcting the other mistakes, I also make sure the ball is lubed before every trip.

We clean and grease ours too including the sway bar. The sound when you don't was awful. We keep lil single use packets in out TV for when it starts squawking, easy fix

Always greese. Easy on and easy off but a little messy.

I use motorcycle chain wax on my ball. Spray a little on when it appears dry. This type of lub is designed to stick to the chain and keep water and dirt out. As the previous poster said "easy on and easy off."

Never used to. Now, always do. Will try the m/c chain wax, sounds less messy. The hitch grease can jump, I'm certain of that.

I've found that applying a little Lotrinin grease helps with the itching!

I grease every other tow. Never had an issue with a coupler sticking as a result.
