Has anybody here did this experiment.

Travel trailer unhooked, front jack on a scale, weigh it to get a good weight. Have a rear storage rack. Take the weight of the front tongue, and load the rear storage rack with weight and see how much weight comes off of the front tongue. Like put 100 pounds on the rear rack and see how much the tongue changes.. I would do it but I don't have a scale and don't have a rear rack. Would be nice to know.

That is something I would love to see. I have a honda ruckus scooter I would love to carry on the rear of the trailer but everything I've read and heard says I would be very unstable with the extra weight back there.

Check the YouTubes for instructions on how to build a adapter to measure tongue weight with a bathroom scale.

Then, you can experiment in your driveway to your heart's content.

Take the weight of the item(and rack, etc) and multiply it by the distance measured from the center of the load (rack) to the center of axle or equalizer if 2 axles. Take this number and divide it by the distance measured from the center of the ball (or pin if a fifth wheel) to the center of axle or equalizer.

This will give you the change in weight on the tongue/pin. This is the amount that you'd subtract from your existing pin weight. I'm guessing you'll be within a few percent of a scale measurement of your measurements and eights are reasonably accurate.

If the rack is 10' behind the axle and your pin is 20' ahead of the axle, you would unload the pin/ball by half the load amount. If both distances were the same, load would equal change in pin/ball. Clear as mud?
