Question Hot water heater - 1st time operation

Hi all,

New member to this forum so hoping I can get some clear answers to a question that my manuals are vague on.

My wife and I picked up our new Jayco 26Bh Jay Flight recently and took it out for a short (1 night) shake-out cruise. We had a great time and everything worked perfectly however we were hesitant to fire off the hot water heater until we were sure we knew what we were doing.

I'm thinking that once I have hooked my hose up to the city water connection and I have water running out of my HOT water spigots I can then fire off my heater. In the control panel just inside the doorway there are 2 switches, one for Hot Water Heater/GAS and the other Hot Water Heater/Electric. My understanding from the very brief walk through we received at the dealership was once I had water in the system I would open the gas valve on my propane bottle and select the Hot Water Heater/GAS button or I could opt to run it on electricity if I wanted. I don't remember any mention of having to manually light the pilot if I selected gas.

Have I said anything above that it incorrect?

Nope, you have got it right. Most important thing is to make absolutely sure that you have water in the tank. You have done that by running a solid stream out the hot water faucet. Oven is the only thing that has a manual pilot on my x23b.

Just make sure the water heater is not on bypass. Water can come out of the hot water faucets if the water heater is empty and on bypass. This is usually done when winterizing the system.

You can always test to see if the tank is full by opening the relief valve at the top of the tank.

Good luck! Having both electric and gas is awesome. My last tank was gas only.

Just like every one stated and it should light on its own. No manual lighting it. That's how our 26BH works. Happy Camping

I'm not sure how your HOT WATER BYPASS is configured. My trailer is setup using three BYPASS valves and looks this ..

AS you can see by looking at the bottom picture you can have water coming out of both COLD and HOT water lines and still not have water inside the hot water tank.. What you don't want to happen is to fire up the HOT WATER HEATER "without" water inside it it. It will burn out your hot water element if there is NO WATER in it...

Hope this helps understand what was said above...

just my thoughts

From a cold start I turn on BOTH the gas and electric for a speedy heat-up. Once the gas burner shuts off, I run on electricity only for the duration of my stay.

The one thing I do differently is, I open the outside access panel and open the pressure relief valve to ensure the tank is full before turning on the heat.

We primarily us the electric heater option. So to ensure we do not burn up the heating element due to an empty tank, I flip off the H2O heater circuit breaker at the converter, as part of my pack up procedure. We have been surprised a few times when we did not have hot water on the first try, as no one flipped the circuit breaker.

You can open gas tank valve before filling the H2O tank, just do not flip the switch to heat up the water if there is no water in the tank.
