How do you folks secure your generator when boondocking?

Will be dry camping this weekend with a new generator and was wondering how most folks lock them up when out and about. First post, cool site, Thanks!

I have my Honda 2000 secured in the back of my truck. When I leave the generator leaves too. To use the generator I just roll up the cover a bit and plug it in.

Lock it in the bed of the truck with a steel cable around the fifth wheel hitch. I have resigned myself to the realization that a portable generator can never be 100% secure.

That is so true, all the thief needs is a dremel tool, you have supplied the power for them

My 2KW HOnda Generator lives in the tailgate corner of my truck bed. I have a locking steel cables securing it there. When I need to use it I just pull it out onto the tail gate. My generator goes where I go haha...

My way of thinking is to keep the generator out-of-sight when not in use. My truck bed has one of those folding thick panel folding covers on it which also locks.

The tail gate is the perfect spot for me to use the generator. The trailer shore power cable just fits plugging into the 2KW Generator using a RV30A-15A adapter.

XD40 and an 870

Well those and I use a cable and lock mine to secure it to the frame/bumper of my TT. I absolutely understand that the cable and or lock can be defeated in seconds, but if that happens ill make an insurance claim right after the police report. I believe the odds are in my favor with respect to thieves and camping, there a lot of targets for thieves to select between so what are the chances I'm the one they will decided to hit, and that is assuming thieves are around at the same time I there.

I either run mine locked in the bed of my truck or lock it to the a-frame of my camper. It doesn't have to be hard to steal, it just needs to be harder than your neighbors.

I use a wire rope(cable) and lock anchored to my truck. If someone cuts at the wire rope or tampers with the lock it will emit a 120db alarm if I am at the trailer. When away they are secured in the back of the truck.

If I am going to be using our Honda 2K gennys I take them out of the front basement compartment of the 5er and set them in the bed of our truck and cable lock them to the tie downs in the bed. While not in use and at night I close and lock the tailgate and close the locking bed cover. Out of sight, Out of mind. Something to be aware of with Honda gennys, thieves have begun to cut the plastic handle that folks cable through and just take the genny anyway. There is a metal cover out there that I think is sold by Wise Sales that would allow you to re-enforce the handle. Bottom line, if they want it they will get it. If you cable it to a tree, make it a big one, I have heard of thieves cutting down a small tree to take a genny.

When camping without the need for the gennys I leave them in the front basement compartment cabled to the landing leg inside.

Like I said, out of site out of mind..............

I have heard the warning on this site and others about cutting the handle, but I have yet to hear directly from someone who had this done nor have I seen a pic of a generator with a cut handle. I thought about getting the metal insert for my generators handle, but then it occurred to me if a thief can cut a handle then they could easily cut the cable or lock too. In my opinion they are much more likely to cut he lock/cable that way the generator can still be sold on CL or eBay. Doubt there too many buyers for a genset missing s handle.

I have engraved my DL# in both of my units. Not that that will deter a thief but a cop will be able to identify the rightful owner if and when it is recovered.

I'd been thinking about a big Knaack or Greenlee job box to put our Honda 3000 in, but only the biggest box will work, and it seems like overkill, not to mention adding 250 lbs weight. I just found this place online:

http://www.kshmarine.com/generator_box.htm

They have a standard one for the Honda 2000 for $275, I am waiting for a quote for a larger one for the Honda 3000. If it's not more than $400, I think I'll go for it.

I chain mine around a suitable tree nearest to where I've got my power cord stretched too. It's not the guy with the cordless angle grinder that I'm worried about, so it's good enough for me. If some pro thief wants it, he will get it.

I ordered a generator box for our Honda EU3000is two weeks ago from these folks:

http://www.kshmarine.com/generator_box.htm

It was $375 plus $40 shipping. It arrived yesterday, I bolted it into the truck bed this morning, and just used an overhead hoist to lower the generator into it. It fits perfectly (I used two blocks of 3/4" wood to shim it so it wouldn't shift inside the box.) The box has 3 removable doors, one big one for the Honda panel, a small one for the pull start and a medium one for the exhaust. Very well thought-out, and only weighs around 40 lbs. (Aluminum diamond plate) I'll post some photos in a few days, we're prepping for a trip to OR, we leave in the morning.

I bought a reconditioned Champion 2000 inverter generator and had nothing but trouble on our trip out West last Spring. At that time, I had it chained and padlocked to the 5er hitch. However, since having so many problems with it I'm thinking about leaving it out in the open. :fingerscross:

I wish i had a picture of my brother's setup(he's a couple states away now). it's permanently mounted to the a frame. He has run bolts through the frame of his generator, through a rubber isolator, through the frame, and through another isolator. It's secured with a plate on the bottom, and large nuts that are welded to the plate and bolts. He also has a crazy muffler setup that makes it nearly inaudible. You could steal it with a torch, or die grinder, but it would be no easy task.
