How long have you been camping?

I used to camp with my family as a kid growing up. We started in a tent when I was very young and then moved to a camper. We ended with a 28' bunkhouse.

I went into the Army after college and when I got out I bought a tent. My wife didn't like camping much so we rented a pop-up. That made her like camping much more. When we started looking for a camper to buy we ended up with a hybrid.

I went to pick my camper up this morning from storage and backed in and hooked up by myself. The couple beside me were amazed that I could do all of that by myself. It takes me 5 extra minutes but it's really not that difficult when you've been doing this for over 40 years.

Those green tents never cooled down at night and around 50 years later my Hybrid feels just like home.

Been camping since I was 7-8 years old. Hard to believe it's been that long... 55 years. Most of that was done in tents until about 4 years ago when we decided AC was a good thing to have while camping in Texas.

Never camped when I was a kid. Unless you count sleeping out in the back yard! After Peggy and i got married and the boys were young we tent camped. When the boys grew up and left Peggy and I started camping with a trailer. And just fo the record--" No I never considered to be "camping" when I was in the Army"!!

RickAE,
Thank you for your service for our Great Country, I've been a camper for 41 years Tent Living off the Grid. Now Rving I love it. I'm looking for campgrounds that allow long stays this way I can visit different States' and take my time looking around.

This is our second year. Like Rick AE, I don't count the Army or the few times in that back yard when we were kids

My dad was born in the north woods of Ontario Canada. His aunt talked his mom into moving to the "promosed land" of NYC outskirts (Yonkers) when he was 10. He lived there till he was 55 and could retire to upstate NY....... So, when I was a boy he had me camping any where it was green as soon as I was weened. Mostly Harriman park and southern Algonquin Park Ontario where my aunt and uncle had a hunt camp. When my dad passed in '07 I couldnt bear to throw away all the old camping gear. Coleman stoves and what not. So I just stowed them away. After just getting my first RV (TT). I'm just fixing it up and "personalizing" it. I ran across a bunch of old topographical maps of the places we used to go camping in Canada and I'm planning on mounting and framing them and using them for wall hangings in the tt. Just goes to show its good to hang on to old things. You never know when they will gain new importance..... BTW, back to the thread, I'm 57. So tent camping as a boy , and first RV now.

My parents took me camping - we had the old-style canvas tents for a long while, and then a home-made (read 'perfectly dreadful' cab-over box on the back of the pick-up. DH and I started in tents when our son was about 2½ .... So it's been (not counting an interlude of not camping) abut 46 years. Golly!

Rick Danger, I love your idea of framing the old topo maps for decoration.

My parents started out with a 13' Scotty and a 54 Nash Rambler station wagon, and we struck out for Florida in 1962. Pretty cozy accommodations indeed. Camped with them till I did my 4 year all expense paid tour of the world courtesy of Uncle Sam. got married in 71, started back in camping in about 83. Then on and off, mototcycle camping, tent camping, then back to trailers in 2010. Just doing it without the kids now. We found a CG in N.C. that we've been going to regularly since we found it in 62 on the way to Florida.

I didn't count the fishing trips into Canada when I was kid. If I count those, it's over 31 years. I selected 21-30 because we're at 29 years.

I really got serious about camping while bow hunting for elk 20+yrs ago. My love for camping and bowhunting elk has only expanded from there. I typically try for 30-45 nights per year away from the city lights.

Counting the very first time my parents camped in an RV in a single axle Shasta in 1958, Cub and Boy Scout campouts from 1959 thru mid 60's, as a Webelo Den Leader for my son in the 90's and tent camping and popup renting in between all that up until 2008 when I bought my first RV, I would say I have camped in one form or another the better part of 50 years. Not every single year but quite a few times in between the first time and today.
