how to hold the bed up????
So it being winter in NY I am using our new travel trailer for storing christmas presents. The master bedroom has storage under the bed by lifting up the mattress. Turns out it is quite cumbersome to try to hold up the bed and put stuff under for storage by yourself. what kind of lift system can I use to help this situation?? We have a 2014 28dsbh whitehawk. Any suggestions will be helpful!!

A lot of people use gas shocks.
You can find them on line or some people have purchased from auto parts stores.
May try Tweetys.com

To hold the bed in the up position on our previous travel trailer we propped it up with a 1 X 2 stick. It had gas struts and still required 2 people to open. Our current fifth wheel with gas struts is easy to open by one person and supports its self even thou we replaced the original mattress with a heavier one. Suggest if you add or replace the original gas struts you look at a strut mfg. website to help determine the proper size and location fot the installation.

Like said above gas struts will make lifting easier and hold it open so you work safely.
If you use a broom stick i would suggest using some thing like this to keep the broom stick from sliding if you accidentally bump it. Hope this helps.

I use a 1x1 stick of the right length.... way cheaper than gas struts... dont open it that often..

I`m surprised the Whitehawk did not come equipped with gas struts under the bed.

No gas struts with our White Hawk. I dont know how much gas struts run. I dont think we would be using that storage all the time or frequently during a trip but right now it certainly would make it easier if it would stay up by itself This is our first travel trailer, upgrading from a pop up so we have a lot to learn!

Here is a thread that delves into the gas strut deal, they are not very expensive or hard to install.

and a few pics from that thread...

The gas struts addition is the first mod I did to our TT. The under bed storage was useless before the struts. I got the struts and brackets at our dealer. The price was comparable to the online shops I checked. I used two 90lb struts IIRC. If you lift the mattress slightly the "hatch" opens right up, so the weight of the mattress holds it closed. I did reinforce the area with some 1x2's and 1x4's.

Installing higher capacity struts should be an easy upgrade

I wish I could use my under bed storage. It's usually just me & my 7 yo daughter and we cannot even lift the bed. My hubby just discovered this unused space & said we could hide the Christmas presents in there.

Yes, I believe it does have gas struts but I can't lift it from corner and unable to get between wall & bed as there's no room.

Yes I can see where that would be a problem if you cannot get in front of the bed and can only lift from the corner. On mine I can stand in front of the bed and lift it. But since I have added foam to the mattress and a heavy comforter the struts will not keep the added weight raised up.

so I have to update. I went out to the camper to get the Christmas goodies out and start wrapping. I lifted the bed up and started taking out some of the stuff. Next thing I know I feel the bed shift. Turns out the tiny little screws they have holding the hinge on the bed stripped and broke free. Add that to list of things to be fixed. Have to take a picture and send it to the dealer...I guess I will get a new piece of plywood for under the bed...
