I just pulled a dumb one
Maybe this should go in the "bonehead" thread".
I dewinterized today, filled the fresh tank with bleach and water etc as usual, flushed the lines, blaa blaa, turned on the propane hot water. Went out an hour later to see if the water was getting hot. Turned on hot water, it was cold. Realized the bypass was still on! So there was no water in the tank for that hour or so while it was running. "BONEHEAD MOMENT!" :cussing : Water heater had turned it self off, I turned the bypass valves, purged and filled the tank and turned it back on. Time will tell if I damaged anything or not.

It seems to be OK. It just ran the cycle and I have steaming hot water. I ran the hot water faucet awhile and the burner fired back up as normal also. It may have been worse had the electric heater been on instead.

C'mon Crabman, that's why we have step by step checklists. Even Nambarc has 1 for winterizing and 1 for dewinterizing. I would think as long as your water heater shut itself off there won't be any problems.

Trouble is I think nambarc used my dewinterizing checklist for a Kleenex! I`m going to blame him anyway, its easier.

Yeah I got some of my RV education through the school of hard knocks, before I became forum savvy. I should have known better on this bypass deal, all I can plead is a brain freeze or weak moment or something.

There is a valve on your hot water heater to bypass the heater itself. In essence, you are removing it from the plumbing circuit. When you winterize, you bypass the heater so you can drain it completely and the antifreeze fills the lines coming and going to it.

You can't blame Nambarc; he's abroad right now. Besides, how can he use a Kleenex with a finger up his nose?
All seriousness aside, I'm glad there wan't any damage done.

I'm a bit overwhelmed with all that needs to be done to get our TT ready. Is the winterizing, dewinterizing, dumping, etc...as difficult as it sounds? How much bleach should be added to fresh water tank? Maybe we should of just stuck with the tent!

It all sounds tougher then it is. The bleach ratio is 1/4 cup of bleach per 15 gallons of tank capacity. Completely fill the tank with water. Let soak for at least four hours per Jayco`s manual. If a faster sanitizing is needed double the bleach amount. I`m thinking of starting a new thread on dewinterizing to discuss the ins and outs. The link in post 17 covers quite a bit on the subject.
