Ice maker reviews
DW has one on the must have list and I'd appreciate some recomendations. The smaller the better, defininetly don't need 50 pounds a day! Thanks in advance.

With space at a premium, I just don't see the need. Probably spend less than $100 on ice during a camping year. Icemakers typically turn out a minimal supply of ice and have found that it lacks the hardness of package ice or even ice we make in the fridge/freezer. We use the mini fridge mostly for drinks so90% of the time we don't even use a cooler.

We use a small ice cube maker that we bought at target about 5 years ago and love it. We paid around $70 bucks for it. It makes ice to keep up to 6 people camping very well for cocktails, ice tea, etc. We found we never have to buy ice from the store since we bought it.
We always start making ice in the morning and fill a container that we keep in the freezer. We have yet to run out of ice. When I'm camping I always have a drink in my hand of some type.

Glamping!! On the flipside, check-out those no-spill ice cube trays - got 'em and love 'em ... especially when dry-camping.

I have had the Magic Chef ice maker for 3 years and it has served me well. Someone is selling it for $99.00 this week. It will produce about 10-15# during a normal days use (12hrs) with you keeping up with unloading the made ice regularly.

Yes, this is an item in the "when we get all the basic necessities, then we'll start looking at" category. Like Rodro123 we can consume a fair amount of ice between mixed drinks, iced tea and throwing some in small coolers for day trips, days on a beach etc. It's definatly not an expense thing, just an alternative to having a bag of ice taking up half the freezer and pulling it out, opening it, re-closing it all the time. I'm curious how efficient they are if their plugged in outside in warmer temps.

I had a 4 door Norcold fridge with ice maker. It was nice to have but it sure takes up space in the freezer. In our new rig we have the same model fridge but without an icemaker. I prefer it. What I do is make ice in trays, then stick in ziploc bag. If you use a lot of ice you can buy an external icemaker for under $100. For me, I really prefer more freezer space.

We have one and love it.
However we went thru 3 from different retailers to get that worked.
We found the best deal was to buy one of the ice makers from Camping World + insurance.
We can replace it at any Camping World store without hassle any where we are. We do not buy the service plan on much but it help with this.

Back in the spring of 2012 when we picked up our camper, we purchased an ice maker as an ice maker was not available in the unit we purchased. I think it is a Dometic. We love it. With 4 grandkids, we go through ice. It stays ahead off the grandkids.

Any chance of getting a make and model from you?

I bought a portable ice maker for our trailer and have had it for 3 years, it is not as reliable as the day we bought it so we are going to purchase a new one next spring. I can say that we used it for 3 years and we camp approx 24 weekends out of the year plus 2 weeks of vacation. I like the convenience and it has definately paid for itself in the three years. we spent approx 100 bucks on it. I would highly reccomend one to any new camper

I guess I'm the oddball here. I can live without ice, and have for years.

I am not sure you are an oddball.....to each his own. I use ice for the cooler (I don't have the outdoor fridge) and cocktails. That adds up to alot of ice . It is convenient, and it does not cost me more money.

We started using ice maker this past camping season called salton. Plug it in on the outside of the 5th and fill with water in the morning and empty at the end of the campfire. What is left over goes into 2 litre cooler for the next day use. Saves lots of freezer space and trips into 5th
