Impatient passers

We went on an awesome trip this weekend in NE Wash. this weekend.
We drove US2 which is one of two major cross state highways. It's a 2 lane, windy, 60mph road through a steep mtn pass. There was just a serious cross over collision this weekend involving someone towing a boat. This hwy is a white knuckle ride even when not towing. Even while cruising at above the posted limit, I always had some guy in a nice Beemer or something on my a$$ on his way to a wine tasting. I used the turnouts when I could but those don't last forever and had a couple close calls when I had to merge back into the main lane. Also, other drivers assumed I should turn out when there's just a wide shoulder or so it seemed. It must be nice to have the confidence of a 18whl trucker.
Ironically, everybody is in such a hurry to relax and vacation. Any tips on dealing with the pressure? There is a line between politeness and safety.

I try my best not to let fools like that bother me. If I can safely enter another LANE, I will do so at the earliest convenience so people can pass. I WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT drive on the shoulder so someone can pass me. I will move as far right as I can safely drive within my lane so a passing driver can see around me and pass when it's safe, but shoulders of roads are not meant to be driven on. There is SO MUCH crap on the shoulders of our roads, it's unbelievable, no way am I putting my family at risk so some fool can get wherever they're going 2 minutes faster.

I've almost pulled the trigger on a horn in the past, but now I guess I'm just better at ignoring foolish behavior and I don't let it bother me. I just shake my head and keep on truckin'!

I think the best thing you can do is hold your ground. If they wanna pass..more power to them. But don't do anything that can put you or your family in harms way. That means swerving, using the shoulder, etc. Highways are big enough for everyone. Most people realize that and give you space. Others can be trolls. Welcome to the RV'ing life.

I refuse to let someone's ignorance put myself or my family at risk. I follow the speed limit and if they don't like it they can pass me when opportunity allows.

They expect me to go slow and I refuse to disappoint them . Leave a lot of space between you and whatever's ahead of you and have a good playlist flowing thru the radio.

Passers don't bother me, it's those idiots on busy freeways who think the space in front of me is there for them to dart into and hit the brakes.

I assume they have no clue what it takes to stop 8 - 10 tons of truck and trailer. I fear one of these days I'll be distracted when they do this and 9 tons will crush them.

+1 on that one! I can't stand that! That space is NOT for you! Unless you want the image of a RAM forever imprinted in the back of your skull, stay out!

Think I might have to get one of those dash cam things. It seems like no matter the circumstances here in TX, if a vehicle collides with another from behind, it is ALWAYS the the driver in the rear who gets the blame by default, ("failure to control speed" or "failure to yield right of way") Dash cam would make short work of that investigation!

Whew, it felt good to get that out; rant over.

Never mind those 8 tons what about those truck drivers with their 60 - 70 tons?
That's why I have during rush hour my coffee break and watch what have become of a few bad apples on the road. Keep smiling and drive safely!

I have two sayings ;

1. If you ride my bumper, it's unsafe for both of us. So I'll just drive slower so an accident can't do as much damage.

2. Riding my bumper will not make the car ahead of me drive any faster.

Many people in this society seem to have little respect for themselves let a lone any body else. I just follow the rules, respect others, use good judgement and do whats safe.
The level of arrogance on the highway is amazing.

It also really makes you change your own driving habits when you are not towing. A new respect and understanding for those that are.

Back to the OP. I just watch my mirrors periodically, if I can slide over to a slow traffic lane I do. If someone passes, I take my foot off the accelerator for a moment. If someone is tailgating, I'll tap the brakes a couple time to let them know I know they are there, I will slow down a bit to encourage them to pass. In general, I just drive my safe speed for the conditions.

What drives me nuts are the college age girls on the freeways. I'll turn on my signals for a lane change and they accelerate to block me. Now, if it is safe, I start my lane change anyways, I can see them in my large mirrors, but they do not know it.

If they want to tailgate me I have no problem with that. I just adjust my speed by taking my foot off the gas and slowing down a little every mile or so. When a passing lane becomes available I stay the right and let them pass. I give them a friendly wave as they go by. For some reason they are not smiling by then.

Yep. I have one now. So far as tailgaters go, they can sit back there all day long. I'm going to do 60-65 Mph whether they like it or not.
