Keep license plate when selling?

Hi,

Am I supposed to keep my TT's license plate when selling it or does the new owner take it?

Thanks.

I'm in Michigan, by the way. Didn't see anything about this topic at the Sec of State website.

In Idaho you keep your plates for RV's and vehicles. The new owners have to get their own.

Check with you state MV office. Most advise you to take it off. Some states will give you a tax credit if the taxes have already been paid for the year. At any rate the tags will do the new owner no good except tempt him to use them illegally. Many states advise you to notify the mv dept when you sell.

You can give it to the new owner if you want, but he can't use it. He has to purchase a new one at the Sec'y of State's office. You might as well keep it and hang it on the garage wall or use it to patch woodp e cker & squirrel holes in the siding of your house.

Virginia owners cannot transfer plates to new owners, either. In fact, there may be liability issues if you let the new owner take the unit home on your plates, and he has an accident.

In NJ you keep the plate. You can transfer it to another of your towed vehicles (new TT,5er).

I kept the Tennessee plate when I purchased my trailer in Washington state until I returned home. I had insurance but was required to keep the plate while transferring the trailer to Canada. I was disappointed when they tol d me to give it up when I got my new plates. I would have liked to have kept it as a souvenir. But a friend of mine was told he could keep his plates from a trailer purchased in Washington. I'm not sure how the province MVB can claim ownership to my plates, but not my friends.

As with the other Wisconsin posters. I had to actually send my plates that I kept, to the dealer that had my trade in so that the new owner could register it.
Kind of goofey if you ask me. I paid for them.
