That's only a good idea if you are sure the awning is completely dry AND you can be absolutely sure the saran wrap will not leak - even if a big wind/rain storm comes up while in storage. If not, the saran wrap will hold in the moisture and promote mildew and mold.
I've seen the awning covers. It seems they should protect against UV rays, but I'm not so sure about keeping moisture out - and they would be a PITA to put on and take off. A ladder would be required.
If you DO get any mildew, etc on your awning (I usually do each year), you can easily clean it. I use a bucket of soapy water (about 4-5 gallons) with a 1/2 cup of bleach added. Wet the awning. Using a long-handled brush, scrub the awning top and bottom. Then roll the awning up and let it sit for about a half-hour. Then unroll and rinse. The awning will sparkle like new!

I've now used the attached mod for two years (including outside winter storage). The awning has stayed dry when covered. Its also a great UV block! Obviously, this works well with my 10' awning, and you'd need to add a bit more gutter to adapt it to your awning length, but that should be fairly easy to do.
