Labor Day in Maine?

We are going to spend the month of August in Maine. I am starting to make reservations and I am wondering where we should stay for Labor Day. I am thinking that anywhere near Acrcadia National park will be crazy crowded.

Anybody have any suggestions where we should look to spend Labor Day and perhaps a nice campground? In fact any suggestions on Maine will be appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

I have family that live in the Boothbay region, we stay at Shore Hills on Wiscasset Road in Boothbay when visiting. Will be there in early July. The panorama is from the footbridge in Boothbay Harbor.

Have stayed many times near Acadia at the Bar Harbor KOA (Oceanside) in one the waterfront sites. Love it there! Here are a couple pics taken last summer.

Here's another vote for Shore Hills right outside Boothbay Harbor. 10 very peaceful days there last June. Next week we're heading for Shady Oaks in Orland - it's fairly close to Bar Harbor/Acadia. I'll post something after we get back.

Thanks Rob. The Bar Harbor KOA/Ocean seems to be booked for all of the dates we tried. It looks really beautiful. Must be very popular.

We did get a week covering Labor Day at Searsport Ocean Shores Campground, a spot right on the water with a private patio. Their prices are right up there with Tiger Run Resort at $94 a night for 30 Amp and a mid week honey wagon dump. I sure hope the 40 gallon gray tank will last us half a week.

Now that I have Labor Day covered we are working on the rest of the Maine portion of the trip. All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks, Mark

Thanks Roger. I do want to spend some time in that area.

When you are in Searsport you might plan on going up to Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. You will be close. Both are really interesting, the bridge has what is advertised as the tallest bridge observatory in the western hemisphere. You ride up in an elevator and end end up on top in glassed in rooms where you can see for miles! Fort Knox is also right on the Penobscot, waiting for a British invasion that never came. Google them and see what you think!

Do you know if there's an admission charge for that elevator/observation deck? I can't find anything one way or the other. Gonna be there next Tuesday.

Thanks,

Roger

We love Chewonki Campground in Wiscasset. It's about a half hour ride from Boothbay, so that's an easy trip up and back. We haven't stayed at Shore Hills, but we have driven through and it looks like a great place to stay.

Information is there, thanks! For senior non-residents it looks like $5 per person, including Fort Knox and the observation tower.
