LED Awning Lights

My husband and I are thinking of installing LED awning light to the underneath of our awning on our Eagle HT 26.5 RLS. Has anyone done this? Recommendations on brand of lights or installation? Do the seem to stick well?

Thanks, Sue

I agree with Paintinfool3....almost too bright. It would be perfect if there was a dimmer installed and I read that some have done this with factory lites.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Do a search "LED awning lights" and you will find lots of info about dimming LEDs. But be aware of the LEDs you buy because all LEDs are not dimmable.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

My 2014 Seneca awning light was a real "beacon" until I added a dimmer. It works fantastic. Here is an older thread where I list the dimmer I used and briefly how I installed it:
http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f5...ote-30699.html

The thread started talking about central compartment locking but several posts in you will see my information.

I bought mine off ebay it's called RGB for Red, Green, Blue. They are very bright but I love them. Put it on white and it lights up all in front of the trailer and 20 feet out. The sticky is strong but not strong enough to last. Mine is still stuck above the awning but when I turned to run down the side of my trailer with the strip I ended up using Velcro that came out clean and looked good. The 18$ ones on ebay are very good for the money. Comes with a remote but you just have to point it at the IR sensor. (Infrared)

Are you sure? I know not all LED bulbs are not dimmable. But an actual LED like under the awning is an diode and if the dimmer is LED compliant it should work? It's doesn't have the circuitry to reduce the 120V like an LED bulb would need.

I got the 5m strip lights from Amazon.com Make very sure you clean the roller tube with and alcohol swab before you try to attach the lights. HINT order the ones without the power converter.. the lights operate off of 12v dc. This will save you money and since your trailer is 12v it is easy to wire a plug for them.

I purchased some from Ebay for about $30 and they lasted about 2 years even though they had the "exterior" specifications. They did stick however.

I found mine are lasting much better being mounted on the side of the trailer right under the awning. I originally had them mounted on the awning tube but they were continually wet and were dieing after 2 seasons.

Our Eagle came with the awning led lights. All the complaints on here about them being too bright baffle me. Ours are not bright enough. They are mounted on the wall underneath the awning and even when the awning is out, they are not bright. When the awning is rolled up, you hardly even know they are on. Have been using them for two years now and I see a lot of comments about having to replace them at two years. I guess we will see soon.

I have LED rope lights installed on the side of my trailer, just below the awning. Decided on a sidewall mount (instead of an awning-roller mount for the following reasons: 1) Wanted to be able to use the lights even when the awning wasn't out; 2) Didn't want the lights glaring in my eyes when I was sitting out at night; 3) The white sidewall and the white underside of the awning reflect the light nicely, and bathe the whole "under-awning area" in a nice soft light; 4) Read several post, here, about people having trouble with the "tube-mounted" lights coming loose/burning out after a season of them being rolled up inside a wet awning.

Due to durability concerns, I decided to get "rope" lights, instead of "tape" lights, and mounted them in clear plastic tracks that came in 4' sections. The first set I bought on clearance at Menards for under $20. Really liked the fact that they were 12V solar powered: didn't have to plug them in, and they came on at dusk and lasted most of the night. Ran the wire inside my awning arm mount and stored the 4" x 4" solar panel inside the front slide-thru storage hatch during travel. Just had to pull it out and set in on the battery box to get some sunlight while camping. Unfortunately, I discovered that the shaded campsites I prefer didn't offer enough sunlight to adequately charge the solar panel. So, I'd typically only get about 4 hours of light each night. Then, the first time I cleaned my roof (with Dawn and bleach), the glue melted on the foam double-sided tape, and the tracks fell off. The cleaning mixture also destroyed the lights. (Maybe that's why they were on clearance )

I ended up replacing the lights with a 16' 120V LED rope light that I purchased at Walmart for under $20. It is rather "bluish" in color, but not as "blue" or as bright as the LED lights on newer Jayco's (and other brands). I ran them so the 120V cord/plug is at the front of the trailer. I purchased a 15' white outdoor extension cord - designed for use with outside lights. I also bought an outside digital electric timer, and just plug it into the outside 120V outlet on the side of my trailer. Lights come on automatically at dusk, and run for 2, 3, 4 hours - or whatever I set the timer to. This time, I remounted the plastic tracks with "exterior" grade double-sided tape, and added a little clear silicone sealant to make sure the rope light didn't come out of the track during travel. They've stayed put for 10 months and two roof cleanings. Only down-side is, I won't be able to use the lights if I ever decide to boon-dock . . . at least, not without cranking up the geni!

Did you remove the factory strip of LEDs or did you just stick the new one over it?

My awning has only about 30% of the LEDs that work, and are VERY dim at that. I think, since my RV is out of warranty, I'd like to do it myself with just some cheap ones from amazon and am wondering how hard it is to remove the factory strip.

LED dimmer for awning

In my last TT I bought the remote LED dimmer that you have to splice into the wiring of the led light in the awning outside and use a tiny remote to dim. Worked mostly ok.
Just got a new 5th wheel and I wanted add a dimmer to the lights and not splice any wires this time.

I found this video on youtube.

Not a Jayco, but this worked for me. It was so easy to do. No splicing, I just unplugged the two wires from the toggle switch already in there and plugged them into my new dial switch. I had an extra blank spot in my control box so I drilled a hole and it put the dial in there.
Now to turn on the lights I can either use my Jayco remote to get 100% of light or turn the dial and tone down the light.
The Jayco remote stills works.
