As a retired police officer I can't even begin to describe the heartache I've seen during my 27 year career over theft. Burglary in particular leaves the victims feeling violated, and vulnerable but any theft of property has a similar effect. These victims did absolutely nothing wrong other than putting too much faith in humanity. Many times they stepped up their home security game after the fact.

I encourage all to take a proactive approach to securing your home and property. Alarm systems, cameras, lighting, fencing, dogs etc. all decrease but not eliminate your chances of being victimized. A determined thief will commit their crimes despite all countermeasures but at least you did all you could do.

Sadly, the large majority of property crimes go unsolved. Put the odds in your favor by being proactive and protecting your property as best as you can and at the same time providing the investigating authority the best possible chance of not only locating the thief but prosecuting them as well.

I grew up on the SW side of Chicago. If it was left in the open... it grew legs.

Yeah maybe someday I can get out that way, we are on opposite sides of the commonwealth. You might be 76 but you know where your key s are.

I did what RoyDaddy did with the locks on his propane tanks...Also you can buy multiple locks with the same key to limit the number of keys you have. I've got 4 locks with the same key which i use for only the trailer stuff and keep the keys on the same key ring as the trailer key sets. My house/truck/daily keys are on a different ring since we only take the trailer keys when we're out with the RV.

This is something I never thought about. I'm thinking a bicycle cable lock might be an answer.

I read somewhere that it's illegal to lock up propane bottles but I don't remember where.

That's good since I lock my spare bottles to my safety chains.

The compartment with the propane bottles on my fifth wheel is the only one without a lock on the door. I assumed it was a legal thing.

Fortunately, I live on my route so I stopped home to get them. Leaving my house, I noticed the tank cover on the ground. I jumped out of my truck and saw that both tanks were gone. They were there last night as I check up on the camper every few days. All of the hardware were neatly placed on the tank tray. The cover was placed upright next to it. The battery box and the locks were untampered. I have the battery stored away for the winter. I was really upset as this is a brand new camper. I went on with my deliveries but I was not happy at all. Then I was thinking about it. Nothing was vandalized or tampered with or broken. I would like to think that that someone did this out of desperation as maybe they needed heat for their family or something like that and if so Merry Christmas. BUT..... I am still not happy about it.

This is what I have on my tank.. it is a Planet Bicycle U lock.. the shortest one they make. it fits over the holder and bolt and cannot be slid off without using a hammer... the key is on my key ring with the RV door and bay keys

I hope for the OP's sake that they were 20 pounders. The 30 pounders are a bit pricey @ $60-70 each!

Why don't they sell 30 pounders with gauges like the do 20 pounders? I love my 20 pounders with gauges.

A full tank and a nearly empty one will show the same pressure so the gauges are really just to give you a very small amount of notice before your tank runs out.

My weber grill has a scale that the propane tank hangs on, it's a lot more accurate than the actual gauges... maybe someone could fabricate something like that for the 30 pounders.

In looking at a large RV lot I noticed nearly all the TT`s there now have 20 lb tanks, even most of the higher end ones with 30`s being an option. I think the ease of switching out/exchanging the 20`s and less weight must be factors. A few years ago most of them like my Jayflight had the 30`s.
