Spent the weekend at a campground close to home. Last night while sitting around with a Caesar, we heard a large crashing sound and a lady screaming for help. My first thought was a car had crashed into another. We rushed over with most everybody else in the immediate area and seen a large 10" diameter branch had snapped off a large cottonwood tree and fell about 50' down and landed on top of a tent. Nobody was hurt the tent was totaled and there was a bird in a cage in the tent which also survived. Children had been playing in the tent shortly before. The size of the branch certainly could have killed somebody had it hit them directly. Lucky day for them
Glad to hear no one got hurt. Cottonwoods are known for this. Lots of money can be made by growing cottonwoods for the companies that make toilet paper from them. I think cottonwoods are ok until about 30 feet and after that they can become a hazard.

I have often thought about that possibility with all the Scout camping we do under trees and at times in windy conditions. Glad to hear that everyone was alright.

Had a similiar incident happen last year when i woke up early to chainsaws. Walked over and found a large oak tree had fallen and landed feet from a tent but the top had grazed a travel trailer putting a good size dent in it. Luckily nobody was hurt.
