Maiden Voyage...Broke A/C....Ughhh!

We made our maiden voyage in our 3 week old Jayco and survived the storms Friday night in Alabama. It was 85 degrees Thursday. That night, I was the only one there that night, I noticed it the AC didnt seem that cold. It cycled off, and I went to work Friday morning. When I returned Friday afternoon it was running, but no cold air. We survived the treacherous weather Friday night going back and forth to the bath house during some warnings, and to my delight, I can't believe the slide out didn't leak. It was nothing but torrential downpours and sideways rain. That was suprising. Anyways, I hopped up on the roof this afternoon troubleshot and the AC. I checekd for continuity on the Klixon thermal switch on the compressor, and it was closed like it should be. Ohm'd out the compressor and it looked ok and was not grounded. Didn't have a meter to check the caps, but they looked fine, usally bad ones are swollen, but that is what I was hoping for. Had somebody turn it on and I checked power. All that was good and the compressor was running. Culprit= No Freon. The High pressure line (the small one) never got hot. It should and it did not so, I guess it has a leak somewhere and I am quite bummed about that.

I know somebody has had this happen, but what was the outcome? I want a new unit. I don't want them searching for a leak, adding valves and ports to charge it only to have to keep doing that for the rest of its life....They (dealer) better give me a new unit and do it the day I take it to them (120 miles), because we have a trip planned for next week.

Otherwise, the trip was great, I am still trying to figure out where I need to store all my junk since I moved from one trailer to another. It's like learning all over again....

Thanks....To be continued...

We had a new folding trailer that the furanace wouldnt't work onthe first trip. We didn't take our electric heater along. We got so cold we packed up and went home. The moral of the story if it's mane made it can break

Generally, freon problems result in the unit being replaced. It's not likely a dealer will attempt to recharge the unit because of the high labor involved and the increase chances of a call back. Giving the dealer a heads up that you will be bringing your rig in and tell him why you feel it is out of freon will give you a better chance of getting the job done more quickly since the dealer may have to order a new refer. Also, the sooner you get your rig into the dealer, the better your chances will be for getting it back in time for your trip.

Had similar problems last spring when we took possession of our 2011 Grehawk 31DS. A/C would not work on first trip out. Dealer replaced roof unit with new one. Have had several other issues, and dealer has taken care of, but what a hassle. We had the dealer do our winterization just in case there were any problems crop up this spring on our first trips.

Called the dealer today and explained what happened, and gave them a rundown of what I did. The service mgr. told me he had a 15 minute test to run, and if it was bad he would call it in to the mfr. and they would authorize an upper unit replacement. He said he has those on the shelf and would get me out the same day, no problem. He asked me to be there early and they would get it done, and not make me wait on the replacement set from Coleman or wherever. He said unless it is a replaceable electric part they do not break open the system at all.

Sounds good to me. I will see when I get there. They really seem to be a good dealer though.

I will update friday from the shop...

Thanks!

Oh how I wish I was at a place where a air conditioner was needed. Glad to hear that you got it sorted out. Enjoy your new trailer.
