my fiver was vandalized

My Jayco fiver was vandalized. I have had it parked for the past 3 months at the place I weekend at. When I arrived this past Friday, I found my battery was dead. After carefully searching to find what I left on (I unplug when I leave to assist the lawn mowers), I discovered that my trailer break-away cable and pin had been removed and nowhere to be found. This meant that my trailer brakes were energized in the heat until my brand new battery totally discharged. I ran to Camping World and bought a replacement which I installed. I'm concerned for my new battery and for the brakes especially. I'll be taking the truck down this weekend (I took the car this past weekend) to be able to hook up and test things out. What damage if any do you think I could have?

Those are some pretty poor vandals if that is all they could think of to do.

I would be asking around to see if any one had a bad break away cable around there. Sounds like they were on a mission for something specific.

Sure hope the battery dying did not do any permanent damage to the brakes but I believe I would have them checked out.

BTW, I always thought the brake away cable required a short to activate the brakes. Taking it off would not activate the brakes. I may be wrong on this?

norty1,

"BTW, I always thought the brake away cable required a short to activate the brakes. Taking it off would not activate the brakes. I may be wrong on this? "

The break away cable pulls a pin in the break away switch, the switch closes and applies current to the brakes. The cable itself, if it has been hooked up properly, stays with the TV. The break away cable itself does not carry any electric current.

I have seen people hook this cable to a link on one of the safety chains. If the trailer had broken away the brakes would NOT have activated.

That's what I was so poorly explaining. Unless they shorted the wires that were left after removing the switch, the brakes should not have activated and killed the battery.

According to rvrev2 they took the cable and pin, not the switch itself.

I hope you replaced the entire "box" not just the missing pin... those are considered "one time use" parts and when used need to be replaced.

I am curious. What is the reasoning behind changing the entire switch? Typically, on a new installation the system is tested by pulling the pin and re-inserting it. Why would this be any different?

I pull my break away cable on a regular basis to check if my electric brakes are getting voltage. My electric brakes emit a low level tone when voltage is applied...

When I re-insert the plunger it is a very positive snap in place which tells me all is ok...

Your brakes will be fine. A couple of years ago we arrived at a campground to find they had somehow over booked their campsites the only one they had was on a ateep incline, well we had driven 200 miles and it was spring break so we took it. After getting in the site and blocking the tires and putting the wedge between the tires i was still concerned that it would try to move(very steep incline) so the park host suggested to pull the brake pin and set the brakes. I too was concerned that it would be set for a weeek and it might damage something. After a call to a local rv repair shop they assured me that you really cant damage anything by doing this.the rv mechanic said its the same as a car with the e brake on except its electric solenoids doing the applying instead of a cable. He said its rare for the solenoids to go out. So we did set them and had no problems with the brakes after that. Yours should be fine, they were probaly only enegrized 3 days max then the dead battery. I would be more concerned with the battery then the brakes. Hope this helps

I had to replace the entire "box." The new pin would not fit into the old box, so I didn't really have much choice.

maybe the lawn mowers got the loose cable hung up in their equipment, thus now missing cable? (just thinking who/why a cable would be taken?)
