New 150 Series Fifth Wheels

I saw one of these units online at a nearby dealership and found it rather intriguing.

Grand Design has developed a new 1/2 ton towable fifth wheel. Below is a video. Thoughts?

Wonder how that compares to the Jayco Eagle HT??
Specs look better but I bet costs are higher.

Happy RVing,

And those are the starting weights... I wonder where light weight trailers cut weight... Either way I say do your thing. No doubt a 1/2 ton can tow more than it should. And no doubt a 5th wheel camper can be built light weight enough for them to do it... Definitely a market for them.

I wonder where they cut the weight. Reflection trailers are sold here in New England and are pricey.

The only floorplan in the Eagle HT lineup that is close is the 24.5 which is a foot longer box than the Grand Design and the Eagle is 525 lbs heavier (UVW). Also the Eagle has 3 slides, Grand only 1 and the Eagle has alot more closet storage in the bedroom. Not sure on exact weights but this could account for the lesser weight in the Grand. Both companies are showing a climate protection package on them. If I was in the market for one I would rather the Eagle as it has more floor space and a openness feel to it and as Ruth mentioned that Grand Design is probably pricey.

Looks like the slide (when closed) blocks access to the bathroom and bedroom. That's a deal breaker for us.

1/2T towable can mean a lot of things. Figure out what YOUR truck can haul first. There is a HUGE range for the 1/2T trucks in payload. An old example, but, my 2006 Tundra (2WD crew cab) had a 1600lb bed capacity. The 4WD reg cab only had a 1200lb capacity. Both were limited to 7000lb of trailer weight.

The trailer shown is a little over 28' long with one slide. Our 2012 HT 26.5 RLS is just short of 30' long with two slides and a dry weight of around 7,200 pounds with a total weight capacity of 9,950. My hitch weight is rated as less than 1,400 pounds. Looks like the HT has a bit more storage capacity inside the trailer with its bedroom slide closet. I like the looks of this FW, but wonder if it's an upgrade over the one I have now

The 150 is not anything new as far as lighter weight 5th wheels go. Many MFG's have lighter versions. Grand Design is just taking it one step further and advertising it as a 1/2 ton towable. I just feel sorry for the uninformed buyer that has a 1/2 ton that doesn't have the payload capacity, but gets snookered into buying it cause the sales person "No Problem".

They do a nice job of hitting the sales points that other manufacturers don't. Like turning radius, and how it's achieved as well as hitch weight of the 5er and why that is important. Most manufacturers rarely mention that.

But, they list an "average" hitch weight, whatever that means, not fully loaded. Same with unloaded weight. Does that mean the hitch weight is based on an unloaded trailer, but, one that has the typical options? Not very clear. If it is unloaded then it could easily go up to 1400 or 1500lb.

Also 'typical' is that you want at least 15% of the trailer weight on the hitch.

Still near or over the rated weights of many 1/2T trucks once you figure in hitch and passenger.
