One of those "how stupid can I be" moments

I bought my F150 in 2014. The first time I towed my old pop-up it drained the battery instead of charging it. I always meant to take it in but I never got around to it.

Now I'm glad I didn't because it would have been humiliating. I was browsing a thread on here and they mentioned that the towing relay and fuse usually came in the glove box. I just looked and sure enough, there they were.

Now that is pretty embarrassing. For three years I've been disconnecting the battery every time I towed my camper when the parts I needed were sitting 5 feet from me.

This forum has been a big help.

I ended up finding out about mine when I was helping tow high school band equipment to competitions. One of the other members was privy to this information. Saved me a lot of potential heartburn with my travel traler.

Why would Ford do that, not install it for you?

That was probably one of my post haha... I saw the envelope right away in the glove but never asked anyone what it was for... Then same thing happened to me on my first trip in my POPUP trailer. Noticed it wasn't charging either...

I was looking in the manual and was looking at the fuse panel under the hood in the book and noticed two spots said something like TRAILER TOW... Light came on so I went and got the envelope for the Fuse and RELAY and they fit right into the spot in the manual that said TRAILER TOW.

Thats how I found out where they went. You would think the envelope would say something on it about what it was for.

As WWT asked, why would Ford do that?

My son has a 2016 Ford F150 and is on a camping trip right now with our Pop-Up. I'm going to text him right now to ask if he has that envelop in the glove box. I just installed a new Trojan T-1275 deep cycle battery and don't want him discharging it.

I asked the Ford dealer why they do it after I found mine years ago. They said Ford does this since the same fuse block is used in many different trucks with and without the tow package. It was easier and cheaper to toss the parts in the glove box than installing on trucks without a tow package.

Since they should be smart enough to know that current flows both ways without a diode in place, they should ask the new owner if they plan on towing and if they want them to install the relay & fuse.

I honestly don't recall which thread I read it in. Still, it makes me feel better knowing someone else did the same thing.

But does Ford not charge for the tow package? Should the charge not actually include installing the parts required for towing?

Technically speaking, it's not required.

I'd be pretty upset with a dealer that didn't install them for me or didn't inform me that I should install them if I plan to tow a trailer.

When I bought my truck it came with an HD towing platform with a 2 1/2 inch receiver. The TT's safety chains wouldn't fasten to the platform because the heavy duty metal and holes were too thick and too spread out. I went back to the dealership and they claimed they had never had a customer with that problem before (which I found hard to believe). After weeks of thinking & searching, I found over-sized 5/8 inch Quick Links. When I went back and shared that information with the service manager, he acted like he couldn't care less. In one ear and out the other.

I didn't have this problem with my 150. I think the dealer caught it during the PDI they do. They are charging you over 1000 dollars for dealer handling. It's nice that sometimes they do more than run it through a 3 dollar car wash and remove the shrink wrap from the seats.

Lol, well FWIW I towed my friends Ram 2500 out of a ditch last winter. He didn't need to install a fuse, but he needed my Ford to save his butt
