Other Negotiating Tools

What are some other things I might ask for if I have bottomed out on price with a dealer?

I have already tried to have them throw in the hitch with no luck. Batteries? full propane? Starter kit?

Ar PDI's typically included?

Give me what ya' got.

A few things come to mind: bug screens, Maxx Air vent, surge protector, stick on levels, Patio mat. Can't think of anything else right now. Good luck!

30A/50A extension cord... occasionally you may hit one of these campgrounds that have all the power plugs clustered together (e.g., Scussett Beach) and you'll need it.

If it is a new rig...batteries, propane and start up kit should come up with it. Or at least on mine they did.

I agree with pawpaw on the Maxx air or some type of vents. If you are getting a TT and does not have a battery powered front crank I would go for one of those. Maybe a bigger TV if there is room. If a 5th wheel and enough room in the basement, a small frig.

Good luck!

The best negotiating tool is a lower bid from one or more other dealers. If you don't have this, it's almost pointless to dicker on the price.

Bingo! Go for the lowest hard cash price! Buy the trinkets yourself on sale somewhere.

Being willing to walk away and look for a better deal is probably the best negotiating tool you have. I would get an on-line quote from places like RV Direct, etc. and take it into the dealer and see how close he will come. If the difference is close to the transportation cost, then you probably will be getting as good a deal as you can. That's what we did back in 2011 when looking for our HT 26.5 RLS. Got a quote from RV Direct, I think, and the closest dealer came within $2,000 of that price so we bought from them rather than drive all the way back to Indiana to pick up a FW. Also had a competing price from a place about 150 miles further away that I think swayed the decision as well.

PDI not included? I would walk away. A dealer that is trying to charge you for a PDI has every intention of nickel and dimeing you to death if he can. Or at the very least he knows something about your unit that he does not want exposed. Very suspicious.

I didn't say it wasn't included. I haven't even actually asked. I would guess that it is but I read another post that someone said they were being charged for it so I was wondering.

Thanks everyone. I have gotten a quote from RV Direct. They are saying it is for a 2015 model. If I added shipping to my location it would be another $3650 added to their price. My local dealer quote is $486 higher than that but for a 2016 model.

Jayco says that if ordered today it would be a 2016 but RV Direct didn't seem to know that yet since they haven't received 2016 prices at this point. So don't know if their quote would change?

What we did was pick out the model we wanted, then I googled the year/model to find out which local dealers were carrying it and asked for their "bottom line out the door" price. Once I had that, I let the other dealers know the best price I was offered. Luckily the one 2 miles away was willing to match the one 100 miles away, and I had 2 others say there was no way they could match that price - they'd only be making $500 on the deal (if that's true or not, I don't know, but the fact they wouldn't come any closer to it, made me feel like I was getting a decent deal!).

Before doing that the dealerships all said they didn't have much room to move on the price, could "maybe" throw in a battery or something. They ended up coming down $2300 from their "can't move on" price.

Done!

Success!!! I came to an agreement with Indiana RV (who also seems to own Richardson's RV in SoCal.) They gave me a better offer than Richardsons right at the 30% off MSRP point. I was assured that I will have no trouble with Richardsons getting service and warranty work. I am what you call a "HAPPY CAMPER" right now.

Ordering tomorrow and then the wait begins..

It's a Jay Feather Ultra Lite. I think it would pertain to any line though. I called Jayco today and they told me that they are finished manufacturing 2015's and that anything one orders now will be a 2016.

I do not yet know what changes will be made in the new year model though. That is supposed to be disclosed to dealers and public any time now.

The dealer writes up a whole sheet of options etc.. when he is done and hands it to me I take a marker pen out cross out the after tax final price and write in the price I am willing to pay.. he either accepts it or I leave... often you will get a call a day or 2 later meeting your price or one that is much closer to your price..

Never pay more than 75% of the MSRP.

I got my dealer below RVdirect pricing and then got a Slide Topper throw in as part of the negotiation. Came with a battery and full propane.

I have purchased 2 new and one used fifth wheels. They all came with new batteries and full propane. I guess my dealer eliminated that as a negotiating tool! LOL
