Pincer Bugs aka Earwigs! what the heck!

So we're sitting in the tt this past weekend. Thunk... something small but heavy enough for me to feel dropped on my head. It wound up on my leg. It was a pincer bug! When I screamed, the neighbors two campsites down heard me and that was with our door closed! It flew off my leg onto the floor when I swiped at it. Then Don says to get a tissue and kill it. Yuh! Right! Geeez, I already squeemishly screamed like a girly girl (Duh! I'm not touching that sucker! Period!). God Bless my 10 yr old granddaughter who saved the day and squished it. Those kids sure didn't inherit their bug bravery from me... ! LOL

Not long after that, another one of those suckers was walking across the ceiling (towards where I was sitting no less). Don killed it. That night, we're sitting at the table eating dinner. What the heck! One appeared on the table. Once again, granddaughter calmly to the rescue.

We have never had pincer bugs in any rv we've owned. We've camp at this cg several times a year without ever seeing them. Where are they coming from? How do you get rid of them?
Any ideas?

For some reason, the obnoxious, little buggers (pun intended) have unusually large hatches every once in a while. I remember working the Ren Fest in Corona, CA a few years ago and there had been a large hatch. The tent one of the Guilds I was in was using had them dropping off the ceiling like rain. YUCK! You should have heard me screech when one dropped down my cleavage! Come to think of it, you probably did. And those things were big enough to throw a saddle on and ride. We tried stepping on them but that only annoyed them. Toward the end of the festivals, the not so little monsters started FLYING! That was the only year they had a problem with them.

We used to see a fair number of them in AZ but I haven't seen one where I live in several years. What I used to get was the huge sewer roaches. I tried all kinds of things (including a pellet gun) to get rid of them but the best was an oddball brand of roach bait that had openings big enough for those monsters to get into (the conventional brands claimed to work with the big ones but they lied). I've been lucky so far this year; I haven't seen a single one, praise God! Hopefully, that will give me time to repair the claw marks I made when I would hit the ceiling, accompanied with a screech that would have done the Bean Sidhe (Banshee) proud, when I saw one of them.

Ya ever see the movie "Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan"?

Those earwigs were wanting to crawl into your ear, so they could burrow deep into your brain and lay their eggs...

Sweet dreams!

Some good came from the experience.... we got online and did earwig research that night. Then there was the campfire "make up a scary story about the pincer bugs" using the facts and wive's tales we found online. Lot's of laughing and surprisingly, no nightmares!

I'm hoping still to find an rv'ers solution to those icky pincers.

There is a powder you can get, which will help to get rid of them. Earwigs like damp and dark locations. They also love the greases you find in and around a BBQ. The idea is, you place the powder in the corners and along the edges under the kitchen sink or bathroom sink. I have never tried using the powder, so I don't know how effective it might be. I've seen the powder for sale at hardware stores.

I grew up on the east coast of Canada, and we got infested with the darn things for years. They came over on container ships from Europe and just love our climate. They love damp, cool places, and especially rotten wood. In harsher times, we sprayed them with really nasty insecticide because the regular stuff wouldn't do a thing. If you want a more environmentally friendly way of getting rid of them, use diluted dish detergent and spray it anywhere your camper touches the ground. Earwigs HATE soap. It will kill them if it touches them. You may have to re-apply every night, but it'd better than dealing with those things.

Regards,
Rick

We're heading out again later this month. We will try the dishsoap and check with Ace/Home Depot to see what options they have. Actually, I think I'll go out when it's dark with a flashlight to see if they are still out there. I hope we don't have a nest of them somewhere. I might try the soap thing now. Thanks

You have 1491 of them as described in count to a million. That constitutes a nest.

Take brick and put on table. Place bug on brick. Take another brick and slam down on brick on table. Fool proof method to get bugs. :hihi:

We carry a large container of Boric Acid powder. Sprinkle it around tires and supports.

Do they sell boric acid at Costco.... bulk.... lotsa... errrrrr, nevermind....

Thanks for the tip Norty

Boric acid is supposed to be good for roaches. Must be true because the ones I used to get seemed to thrive on it.

I wonder if bounce sheets would keep earwigs away?
