Places to stay along Hwy 1 and 101 in CA

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some good suggestions on places to stay at and to visit along highways 1 and 101 in CA this coming April/May. I'm renting a Redhawk 29XK and will be heading down to the Sacramento area along I5.

On the way home, I plan to head over to the coast from Sacramento and wander my way back north via 1 and 101. My first time ever doing this and I'm really looking forward to it.

However, I'm clueless about where all to stay, what all to see and all that. I will not be towing a vehicle, so I need to go places that the RV will go to, which means I will not head into San Francisco!

And suggestions on places NOT to stay at would be quite helpful as well.

Thanks in advance!

Hehe, check-out ReserveAmerica for SF, Pacifica is close-in and public transportation (BART, buses, Uber, etc.) is great. Downtown SF has buses and cable cars and a little walking is always good (e.g., between Chinatown and the wharf) and being a local, plan on at least 3 days! It's a shame to miss all the fantastic things in SF - and if you DO plan on visiting, make your Alcatraz reservations [http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/] weeks before you plan to be there!

What Hattie said about using public transportation in SF. We drove through there (not towing on that trip), never again. So even with a car, I would still recommend public transportation. We did see Alcatraz when we were there and I highly recommend it. But, yes, make reservations. And don't be late for the boat!

Do try to get to the Monterrey area, although that may be a bit farther south than your plans allow. We stayed at the Moss Landing RV park. A bit pricy but only 20 minutes from Monterrey. If you are there, eat at Phil's Seafood. Awesome place!

Don't know where your going to start on HWY1 from San Francisco and I don't know that stretch up to Mendocino but the road north of Fort Bragg should be a no go!!! Rockport to Leggett is a total nightmare do not attempt that section. Google it real close and you'll see one turn after another the whole distance and their all tight.

Pomo in Fort Bragg is excellent. We stay there every time we go to the coast. Plan to spend a couple of days in that area to tour Fort Bragg and Mendocino.
