I just bought a pre-owned 2002 Starcraft 'Star 'Shuttle' pop-up. I'll presume it's very similar to the Jayco. According to the owners manual, the tires are listed as follows:

5.30 x12(c)
ST175 x 80D 13C

Is it safe to assume those are two different tires and perhaps you had an option between the two?

Secondly, the actual tires on the trailer itself are...

ST185 x 80 D13

Is it safe to assume based on the foregoing that the actual tires on the trailer are not the correct size tires for the trailer?

I think there should be a sticker attached to the outside of the trailer that shows the proper tire size and inflation specs. I'm not sure if the stickers were mandated in 02.

I upgraded my ST175/80/13 with ST185/80/13's, the tire is a bit wider and taller, and about 100lbs more load capacity.


As long as you don't downgrade the load capacity and keep the same tire size on all wheels there will not be a problem.


oh and the D13 just means the tire is bias ply 13inch tire, you can interchange with R13 (radials are better for heat dissipation)

Not sure about 2 different sizes, the first one would be a 12" diameter wheel with a 5.3" wide tire maybe.

The ones you have on it are close enough. The tires on it are about 1/2" wider and 1/2" taller. Shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't worry about them. Someone else spoke to the load capacity so your good there.

Is that simple enough?

The tires are close enough to the correct size. I'd be more worried about the DOT on a 2002 model than the size of the tires themselves. Check the DOT to determine when the tires were manufactured. If they are more than 4 years old, time to replace.

Of note, I had 6 year old tires on a pop-up when I bought one many years ago. Tires looked good, so didn't think about it much. I popped all three (tires on the ground plus spare) within a year...one on a very busy highway with all kinds of big rigs blowing by. I don't play around with tires anymore.

Since the ST185 x 80 D13 fit I would stay with them... the extra safety margin of the stronger tire is a good thing..
