Propane While Towing
Our fridge runs off of propane and electricity. Should we run it off propane while towing?

Oft disagreed upon question, on these pages, but my answer is YES, that's how the fridge is designed to operate....

This question is almost like asking a car guy about oil. You will get lots of answers. Ultimately the answer is yes you can, sometimes there are restrictions such as at gas stations, some tunnels.

Our fridge gets turned on in the spring when the trailer is taken out of storage, and turned off in the fall when it's put back into storage. It runs all summer, even while the trailer is being towed. Keeps the beer cold.

I usually switch to propane while still in my driveway, a few hours (or even a full day) before I drive, just to ensure that the fridge "stabilizes" on propane, for the drive......

I flip it over to propane just before we set off on our trip.

Gosh,,,,what a question!!! I'm surprised the "safety police" have not jumped all over this thread. There are those that will tell you that being on propane will cause an explosion at the fueling station. Those same people smoke while fueling their own vehicle.
As for me, the answer is YES. Kitty and I turned the fridge on when we picked the camper up at the dealer and it has not been off yet. Been on elect or propane for 4 yrs now, no problems.

Ours stays on "Auto" while we're on a trip. If I want it to run off propane while we travel, then I just open the propane tank. Usually for longer trips and depends what's in the fridge, but doesn't really matter.
Turn it off when gassing up and tunnels (I hear - never towed through a tunnel yet :-)

We are supposed to keep the RV level when running the propane fridge. If we are climbing a steep grade of say 8% how would that affect the fridge?

We keep our FW plugged all year long, but do not run the fridge until a couple of days before taking off with it. Run it on electricity until we hook up the night before we leave when it goes on propane. Hook up the night before because we also hook a boat behind the FW for the trip to the lake and fishing. We do not turn the propane off while on the road and we travel over a lot of up and down, including a pass that rises above 9,000 feet from the 5,000 ft+ that we leave from. I don't believe temporary variances from "level" will harm the fridge, it's only when it sits for too long in a position that isn't pretty level does the fridge get finicky.

Nope. Its not a safety issue. I find it unnecessary. Ice in the freezer in soda bottles keeps everything cold even for nine hours of driving in the desert.
For sure its the tiny Norcold.. Would want to test first on a bigger one..without food.

Don't know if this adds much clarity or not, but we do run our propane fridge while traveling down the road and refueling diesel. Some commercial vehicles actually run off of propane only (the Schwann's food delivery truck for instance) and not gas or diesel.

The BEST thing for a propane fridge is the rocking of going up and down the road. Keeps everything flowing, now a long multi-hour uphill (if that's possible anywhere) might not be good....

Voice of paranoid couple:
"We simply do not drive with the propane tanks open."
If I could rig enough power from the truck's alternator to keep the fridge operating while underway, I would.

I limit my driving to about 5-6 hours or 300 miles and my fridge stays cold with no power. My next trip will test my new 12 cf Norcold in my Precept 31ul. I will check it with the new infrared temp guage and let you know the findings.

It doesn't. Level is only a requirement when the TT is stationary; as the fluid & vapors are dependent on gravity pulling them down.
When moving, the motion of the TT keeps fluid & vapor moving.

Yes, we leave the propane on. I didn't realize I should turn in off at the gas pump when I have my cigarette break.
When we had a motorhome, it had a 3-way (110, 12 volt or gas) refrigerator. We just left it on automatic and it would run on 12 volt while driving. If my memory serves me right, our old Flagstaff pop-up also had a 3-way refer. I wish our trailer had the same, but the 2-way works just fine.
btw, just kidding about the smoking thing. I don't smoke cigarettes.
