Purging LP bottles!

When we left on our 6K+ mile trip last month to the Pacific Ocean and back, I figured out that our LP supply to the trailer fridge wasn't working. No big deal, I switched to the other bottle. We used that bottle for the entire time we were on the road, 26 days, and it still was working when we returned this past Tuesday. (Yes, we used it all the time to keep the fridge cool, which is the subject of another thread here.) Anyway, today I took the bottle that failed to our local LP dealer, and he told me that many of today's newer LP bottles fail because they have not been properly purged. His view is that these new bottles still have a bit of moisture in them, and unless they are purged properly, they will fail to deliver propane when needed. Just as our bottle did. Anyway, we purged both the new bottles on the WH, and they now are hooked up and working properly.

Just fyi. YMMV.

Purging LP bottles!

Your LP dealer is correct. New propane bottles do need to be purged the first time to get the air out so that they fill properly.

However, with that being said, this should have been done when your tanks were first filled.

When you had problems with tank #1, did you try closing the tank valve and open it very slowly? Sometimes this has to be done several times thanks to the safety device in the propane line that shuts off propane if it detects a leak.

Good luck! Hope the purging process worked for you.
