Refrigerator Cooling Time?

Going to do some driveway camping tonight with the kids.

Trailer is hooked up to house power. I turned the the fridge switch on to auto and the cooling switch to 5. How long will it take for the fridge to start cooling down?? It has been on for about an hour now and I don't feel it getting cool yet. The green light is on so it has power. Would it cool down quicker if I turned it over to gas? Only turning it on so I can put some milk in it for the morning.

It is a 2016 Jay Flight 26BH.

Usually about 24 hrs, you should feel the bottom of the freezer starting to get cold in an about an hour or so.

Ok thanks. I just checked and the bottom of the freezer is pretty cold as you said! Good to go!

I usually start mine on lp first and let it get cold as it seems to cool down quicker on lp , then I switch it to electric after about 2 hours

x2... It cools down a lot faster on propane...

Told the DW that I thought it was a good idea to do some driveway camping when we get the new 5er rather than going away for the weekend....just to make sure everything works well. She gave me that look.... So I suggested we build a fire in the neighbors yard next to the trailer and enjoy our morning coffee just like we were in a camp ground. She thinks I'm nuts ��.

Anyhow...I always start the refer on lp rather than electric. Cools faster and is supposedly not as hard on the refer. Don't know about that but it sure does cool more quickly. Couple hours is all it takes...

We do the same before a trip. I can only speak for whatever norcold our trailer has. It should be all the way cold in less than 12 hours even on electric .. I turn it on the night before and my wife packs it the next morning and it's down to temp on just electric.

Luke driving down the road has a risk. So does anything including running frig on lp towing. But many do including me. There is a safety shutoff if a line was to rupture. Turn your tank on real quick with it connected and it may trip it.... So I consider it as safe as driving the rig to the campground...

That is about the most debated topic on this forum. some say yes some say no way. If you cool your fridge down to temp and throw a bag of ice in the bottom it will stay cold for hours while you drive to your CG that is what I do. I check temp at the CG then turn it back on.

Depending on the length of your drive, outside temp, and how full the fridge is you can shut off the lp if you're uncomfortable having it on when traveling. A well stocked refer will stay cold for quite a few hours as long as it was cold to start with and you don't stop and open the door repeatedly.
I've always traveled with the lp on and had no issues....a buddy of mine always shuts his off.
I guess it's personal preference. Just do what you're comfortable with and enjoy the trip!

That's a huge topic on this site.

The reality is that it will not damage your equipment. So in that respect it is safe.

The safety issues are...
having your propane tank turned on if there is an accident or incident and
having an open flame if you pull into a gas station or other place where there may be flammable vapors.

In addition to safety issues, there are laws that may require you to turn your propane off in tunnels, when refueling, etc.

You could also ask, how much better is GM than Ford?

I run mine on. I find the propane scarier to sleep with on than to tow with on and I sleep with it on!

I always start my refrigerator on electricity a week before a trip, and I allow 24 hours before I put anything in it.

The valves on my propane tanks are normally shut off when the camper is parked in my driveway. I always turn one on just before unhooking and leaving on a trip, so the refrigerator will continue to work going down the road. I usually light the stove and let it burn for a minute or so to clear the air from the lines so the refrigerator will switch seamlessly from electricity to propane.

I also run my fridge going down the road. We haven't camped far enough away yet that we need to gas up while traveling. Though a 36g tank does help avoid that.

While it is morning already, and you have received answers to your question, to add we also turn the fridge on a day early before packing it to get it good and cold. It can take a while depending on outside temp, and humidity. I have started to start it on propane the last few time just to get a "jump start" on cooling the fridge down since we keep our trailer about 10 minutes from the house. Once in our driveway though I usually switch it over to electric after a short time.

Thank you all! The fridge is good and cold this morning! I will definitely remember to start it up a day early from now on.

Was definitely a good night at Camp Driveway! Kids are up and just got done cooking breakfast. Will be staying another night [emoji4]

I turn mine on with electric 24 hours before we fill it with cold things from house but it's cold in about 6-8 hours. After the 24 hours we switch to gas to roll. Dealership told me gas is slower.
