Road assistance/Extension cords
Hello, I have 2 questions: What road assistance program would you say is the best? We did have AAA-RVplus, and just found out, (not the hard way), that they will not pull/tow a dual wheeled RV....thanks for the info AAA!
2nd question: What is the best extension cord to use to plug RV to house plug?
Thank you ahead of time. We own a Melbourne 29D, and we love it, we are pretty new with the camping scene, as we just "saw and bought", learning more each year.
NO MORE SNOW!

I've always gotten good reviews from Good Sams RV Roadside Assistance $79.00/yr I believe.
I was just getting ready to order it this week, bit State Farm covers my TT and will tow to the nearest repair center, no limit on mileage.
So, I just stayed with my normal auto insurance.
As far as extension cord, make sure you get at least a 14 awg (15amp) heavy duty cord. Spring for a 12 awg if your going to into 20amp outlet
or longer than 25'.
You can also buy that gage wire with good black rubber covering and put your own ends on it if you like. Home Depot or Lowes.
Best regards,
Doug

We have Good Sam's. Wife thought it would be a good idea and we used it twice to tow my son's car so for the first year it paid for itself. No hassles in using it.

Where did you find that aaa won't tow a double axle trailer? I just signed up for aaa rv plus, so I hope that's not the case.

Hello, last week I was calling to reorder, and started asking questions. She told me herself that they do not tow dual wheels that it is only "eligible RVs". I read the booklet and thats what it says, "Eligible", in every paragraph. I did think I was told when I bought it last year that they towed! I am in the Pittsburgh area, not sure if that is the norm here.

I have been with AAA for 37 years. I have finally decided to let my membership go. AAA Plus and Premier does not come close as to what USAA has provided me in coverage and towning for my vehicles and travel trailer. Additionally, AAA charges for each additional person you add. This drives up their membership cost up greatly. I alwasy suggest checking with your own insurance company first, then shop around and compare.

We have been with Good Sam RV roadside assistance for many years, but have never had to use their service. Have heard from others that have needed services that they are really good, for what that's worth.
As for the extension cord, we park the trailer beside the house, and I installed a dedicated line and circuit breaker with an exterior weatherproof receptacle, so that the trailer's own shore power line can be plugged in, just as you would at a CG. If that is an option for you, it was not expensive, and does the job very well without worrying about an extra extension cord.

We have our trailer insured through Progressive and it includes roadside asstance and tows. I think adding the roadside assistance to the policy was like $5 or $10 extra per year. Worth it, just in case!

That's the kind of comment you tend to miss when reading posts, but I recently had a niece learn that the hard way. She went off the road during a winter storm. She wasn't hurt and there was no damage to the car, it just needed to be pulled back on the road. When it came time to pay, they found out only her husband was covered.

Lesson: Auto Insurance companies have RV insurance rider policies. Problems start when you are in a remote area or in the Southwest & western States. AAA has been know to tell their customer to call a towing company and AAA will reimburse them later. Problem there is you're on the road broke down and have no idea who a good tow company is plus where do you want your RV towed to???
If you're smart you'll stick with Good Sam or Coach Net. They both have been at it for years and have exhaustive lists of tow companies- RV repair facilities and local hotel/motel facilities. They also cover travel in Canada.
Otherwise you're on your own.....
Happy trails,

State Farm have updated their policy.
You have 1 number to call on the back of your card.
The towing company bills State Farm directly.
No mileage limit. They tow you to the nearest repair facility that usually has been vetted by them.
Just been working through this this week. I'll report how well State Farm stands behind their service.
Best regards,
Doug

I've used Coach Net for 12+ years.
I've been extremely pleased. The policy covers any vehicle I own. It's been handy a few times with the RV and more times for my college daughters.

That's awesome! We've had to use SF's roadside assistance once and was pleased that they quickly reimbursed me, but this is even better. :applause:
(That's a response to dougtoms01's post. Sorry ...)

Fwiw, I called AAA today and was told the agent was unaware of any restrictions on covering a travel trailer as long as it was for personal use and not commercial use.

I think the original post was talking about dual wheels not dual axles. It looks like he has a Class C which has dual wheels.

Have been with Good Sam for more than 20 years- Have used their services many times without any problems- I think it pays to have coverage from a company that specializes in our type of rigs- JMHO- DD

The suggestion to install a dedicated outlet to match your rv cord is excellent- There are too many "phantom" electrical draws in your rv to rely on a household outlet- My son found this out the hard way- He had 2 converters fail from overheating due to inadequate amperage- He usually listens to his dad but had put off wiring his garage to handle his fiver- JMHO- DD

I agree with Dougtoms01 on the extension cord. After having an electrian friend test the amps with the A/C running, I won't be doing that anymore. I keep the fridge on all summer and I used a 14 gauge cord with now problem but the 12 on a 20 amp is better. It all depends to what you want to run the th RV
