Route Planning

Forgive the newbie question, but, what do you all use for route planning? Here in NY we have a lot of "parkways" (low overpasses and/or no trucks or trailers allowed) and I don't want to wander on to a road with low overpasses or where towing isn't approved.

My Titan has its own GPS but does not have a "truck route only" function. Is there typically an update or mod available for stock gps? Do you use any specific smart phone apps instead? Any other tips?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

We have a Garmin RV360 GPS. It is a fabulous addition to our travels.

They have other less expensive models that do the same thing with a smaller screen.

Allstays.com is a app that has a filter for that and a whole bunch other stuff. About $10

I use the truck's GPS as the primary pathfinder and Google maps as backup. Between these two I can get my route, I augment that with fuel stops, Wallymarts and rest stops using Allstays.
Allstays is also my go-to app for camp ground info.

Thanks for those who suggesting Allstays. I've actually had it a few days and have been tinkering with the filters on there.

Any suggestions as to how to avoid "no-truck/Rv/bus/trailer" type roads? Is that available in Allstays or another app?

Thanks I will look into this. I had hoped to avoid having to mount a portable gps right above the one in my truck but if that's what it takes so be it.

Thanks!

X2. I use the Garmin Base Camp software for trip planning as it allows you to set parameters (height, weight, etc.) for your rig and then routes you accordingly. In two years and ~11k miles we haven't had any issues

X3 - I have the RV660LMT unit and use the Base Camp software for trip planning. It's not the most intuitive software but after using it for a bit it definitely gets the job done.....

I don't think Allstays can do that. I will warn you of low clearances but I don't think there's anything on road conditions.

This link was posted in another forum. Not sure how helpful it will be but maybe states wouldn't build an underpass shorter than their limit?? Around here in CA there are truck bypasses that are available I assume to separate slower traffic or avoid underpasses.

Buy a commercial hauler atlas. It will give you every height of every low point in a state, by state for starters. Then it will show you all roads that are allowed to either tow or haul on. Even if you get last years at a discount it's worth it to have.

I have a DEZL 560LMT by Garmin that works pretty well for my routes, but I always have it mapped out ahead so I know where I am heading.

We have been using the Garmin RV760. You can switch between car and RV modes for route planning.

Can you map out a route on Allstays like you can on a GPS?

AllStays let's me find campgrounds. LP, low clearance bridges, truck stops,....
To plan or compare routes I either use Google Maps on a laptop or I use my Garmin GPS. Then I use AllStays to find where were going to stay.

I bought a Garmin RV 760LMT yesterday. I have a older Garmin (about 10 years old) that we have used up to now and it has served us well. But it has taken me on a few narrow back roads that I would rather have not been on. So I'm looking forward to the RV specific 760.

Garmin RV GPS, routs us to avoid toll roads, low bridges, Propane restrictions, even warns of steep grades and sharp turns.

Route Planning

Live in CT and have same challenges as the OP. I frequently travel with our 45' Jayco and Dually crew cab in the NY NJ area. Invest in a Garmin, Magellan, or Good Sam (branded made by a GPS manufacturer) GPS. Prior to the trip plan it using a hauler atlas (recommended as well as other poster) or as I do, I use the Good Sam web based route planner on the site, build plans including fuel, food, and restroom stops and possibilities, and print them, then I program my Magellan with same info and use both to verify they concur with each other. With my rig there is no room for a mistake. I'm also a professional pilot and airline pilot examiner by profession, so it's programmed in me to always over plan to ensure things go smoothly. When you're going to get bit, is when you're in a rush, at a campground not home, and need to make a change to your plans and decide to just skip the planning. Don't allow yourself to fall victim to that or "get-home-itis", it will eventually bite you.

Enjoy! Best of luck and have fun this season.

Love my Garmin. Can plan your routes on the PC and download to the GPS once finalized. The BluTooth feature really makes using the telephone a safe option.
