Black Book: Trailer Values Post Record in May

Black Book reported that wholesale values of travel trailers sold at auction hit an all-time high in May, closing above $12,000 for the first time.

Motorized units also surged 15% to break through the $40,000 barrier, something the sector hasn’t achieved since May of 2013.

“Auction volume was up significantly, dealers were in a buying mood, and the quality of units was much higher than in recent months,” said Eric Lawrence, director of specialty products. “Industry publications have been tracking an uptick in consumer interest in RVs, and the increased auction activity seems to confirm their analysis.”

Taking a closer look at the markets, the average selling price for motorized units was $40,350 in May, which is an increase of $5,182 (15%) from the previous month. Towables came in at $12,069, up $104 (0.8%) from last month.

This also marks the fifth month in a row that values for all segments have moved in the same direction. One year ago the average motor home sold for $37,850 and the average towable unit brought $10,832.

“Auction volume was also strong as motorized units were up 28% and towables rose 10%,” said Lawrence. “I expect volume to remain stable for the next several months.”
