RV fire in Sanatoga PA today

Camper burns in Sanatoga driveway

RV fire right in my neighborhood. Suspected cause is the refrigerator. Can't tell the RV manufacturer from pictures in article.

Here's the text in case the link doesn't work. This occurred today 5/11.

Lower Pottsgrove >> A 74-year-old Sanatoga couple watched Monday as firefighters put out a blaze that destroyed their beloved camper parked in their front driveway.

Crews from Sanatoga and Ringing Hill fire companies arrived on the scene at around 12:44 p.m. and worked for about 30 minutes to put out the flames, which Lower Pottsgrove Fire Marshal Lew Babel said started in the kitchen of the camper.

“The refrigerator is supplied by electric, gas and battery. Any one of those three things could have failed, we don’t know yet,” Babel said.

John and Dawn Kelius, both 74, watched from their driveway at 1587 Rupert Road as the firefighters worked on the camper. John Kelius said they had just returned about 10 days ago from a trip that took them to Fairfield, VA.

Four years ago, the camper had carried the couple all the way to Alaska and back.

“There’s no other way to travel. Once you travel like this you don’t want to do it any other way,” John Kelius said of his camper.

The vehicle, which they have owned for eight years, is worth more than $40,000, he said. The fire wiped out the back of the camper and destroyed much of the inside. Kelius said he doesn’t know if he’ll get another one.

Fortunately, the camper was parked far enough away from the home to keep the blaze contained.

“Another 10 feet back and we would have had a problem,” Babel said.

The Kelius’ were grateful for the firefighters who came out to their home on a steamy Monday afternoon.

“You know what amazes me,” John Kelius said, “is that these are all working men and they had time to come out and put out my fire.”

I don't think that will buff out. Hope they have insurance!

Thankfully no one was hurt. Insurance covers the rest.

It looks like Jayco graphics.

I was in Hartford Indiana this past week for work. While drive around one evening I found a junk yard (CoParts), it had a number of RVs in it. There was an older Winebago MH on the properties edge, that had a frig fire. There was a number of other units in there that I could not tell what happened to them.

I often wonder about how much the risk of failure is on appliances that are placed in a slide out. I know we are only talking of inches of movement, but think about how many times those units can go in and out and how often gas lines/water lines are moved and potentially kinked. Over time, you are going to get a weak point and a leak. Not saying thats what happened here, but just a thought.
Also, I cant tell you how many campers I have found with stuff packed in the vented area behind the fridge. One of the first things I do every season is check to make sure no critter has built a home in that space.

I wonder how many people never open up their access cover. I installed a dedicated 12V power point in there for my 12V air compressor. So I open it up fairly regularly to plug in, and I do check what things look like it is fairly dirty in there. I know mine currently has a lot of little pieces of debris in it from manufacturing and bits and pieces of what I think are leaves and dirt from our travels.

I think it is time to pull out the shopvac, and clean that area.

Jagiven, there are some interesting listings on coparts site. I found lots of older Jayco's and a few newer ones too. There is an 2013 Eagle listed on there that is classified as a "biohazard/chemical" damaged....maybe it was a meth lab.
