Sanatizing tanks

What is the generally accepted amount of Clorox needed to sanitize my fresh water tank/system (around 50 gal as I recall)?

As I generally rely on campground water it's now been 3-4 years since I've done this; and now I've forgotten the ratio/ amount of Clorox to water in my holding tank. I've been negligent far too long.

Headed out once again (w/grandkids); next week (Oak Mountain SP, Pullam, Alabama).

I mixed 1/4 cup bleach in 2 gallons of water, added to tank and filled with water. Run the water through plumbing and let it sit a couple hours. Flush system twice.

My Jayco Owner's Manual states: "Prepare a chlorine solution using 1/4 cup of household bleach to one gallon of water in a container. Prepare one gallon of solution for every 15 gallons of tank capacity. This will result in a residual chlorine concentration of 50 ppm in the water system." It goes on to say to then fill the tank and open the hot water line on each faucet and let water flow until a chlorine smell is noticeable. Then do the sam on the cold water lines. Let this solution remain in the system for 4 hours and drain. Refill the tank with fresh water and run it through the hot and cold water lines until there is no chlorine smell and repeat if necessary. It does say that you can double the chlorine "dose" if you cannot wait the 4 hours in the above steps.
Hope this helps.

Do any of you sanitize the water heater or just bypass it and do the lines?

I have sanitized the heater in the past, as well as the fresh water tank. Takes about 60 gallons of water to fill and sanitize my rig. 1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons.

I was thinking I previously used a cup per 15 gal. Guess I can scale it back quite a bit.

I will still be using city water but thought it was overdue.

Thank you.

I buy chlorine tabs and use them each year when I pull the trailer out of storage. Put one or two in the tank fill with water and let it sit for a couple of hours while I am washing other things to make sure the tablets dissolve. Then I run it through all the faucets and let it sit for a couple more hours. run the rest through the system with the pump. Fill it twice and run it through the system to rinse.

Just FYI, Oak Mountain has water/electric at most sites. We'll be there in a few weeks for spring break. Hope you have fun!

Yes, we look for power, water, sewer AND WiFi. We are modern (read lazy) campers.

Congratulations on your first Jayco and welcome to the forum.

Is sanitizing the fresh water system 'necessary'? I haven't heard that it is required - and I think Jayco literature recommends it - but it certainly isn't a bad idea for a new trailer. If you bought a used trailer, it is certainly a good idea.

I would say that the majority of the folks on this site sanitize their fresh water system at least once a year when they 'de-winterize' the unit.

If mine spent the winter with antifreeze I too would sanitize it after returning to service, but I don't do that.

My winterization procedure is simple open all drains and tanks as well as open all water spigots. These are left completely open all winter.

I never sanitize my HW tank because it is bypassed if I winterize and is drained and open.

My thought on a brand new rig is that there could be construction dirt/debris in the water system. Therefore, I think it is a good idea to sanitize the whole system, including the FW and HW tanks.

IMHO, the most difficult part of the process is the FW tank (mine is about 80 gallons). I can see skipping that if you always plan to camp with water hookups. That said, you never know when circumstances might call for having a water tank ready to use.

I'm no "tree-hugger" but wish there was a way to sanitize without using so much water.
