Scary moment on the interstate

We were on out way to florida down I65 through Birmingham (very rough interstate BTW) traveling behind my dad pulling his 5er. I decided to pass him so he could check the bicycles on the back of my 5er. Just after I got over in front of him my truck started shaking almost felt like riding a bull at the rodeo. I grab my trailer brakes and start to merge over across 3 lanes of traffic get over on the side of the road, and to my surprise no flat tire. I get under the truck and realize, I broke a tie rod end. I limp off the interstate to a walmart parking lot to drop the 5er, get a tow to the local tire store and 6 hours later I am on my way. This happened while going 65 MPH. The mechanics at the tire store couldn't believe we came out of that in one piece. All i can say is that is the last time you catch me passing in the far left lane on the busy interstate. Looking back, i think the 5er is what saved us.

Sounds like you maintained control of a dangerous situation that could have easily had catastrophic results. Good to hear that everything was repaired in short order and back on the road.

Glad to hear you and the family are safe with the bonus being no terrible damage to your vehicles.

On a lot of roads in my neck of the woods you aren't allowed in the far left lane while towing. I guess the rule is there to avoid having to cross over multiple lanes to get to the shoulder if a breakdown occurs.

I'm also glad to hear everyone was safe!

After reading your story, I'm more convinced I'm going to be "That Guy", as was stated in this thread:

I am glad everyone is safe. That being said, as a certified master mechanic, it is hard to belive you did not feel the shaking steering wheel for months while braking towing or not. You are lucky to be alive.

X2 on the collection plate. As the saying goes, there are no atheists in the foxholes on the front lines, or in a situation like yours. Thank the Lord you all are safe.

I don't drive the truck, everyday but I noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Even up to 5 minutes before it broke, the intersate is horrible through birmingham. It is essestially broken concrete in 8 feet sections.. At anyrate there was 0 warning that this was going to happen.
