Scents and scenseability

I recall traveling in a motor home as a child and never wanting to use the washroom because of the "smell". Just wondering if perhaps back in those long long ago years chemicals were not used and wondering if new technology has solved those issues. Do most people find there is a certain amount of smell? Do you learn to live with it or are there other tricks to know. For instance I wondered if anyone used the plug in air wicks or similar air freshners. Perhaps there would be a concern of using the outlets for such purposes? I know you need to be sensible about these things Anyone care to share on this topic?

The only time our bathroom smells is when someone is leaving it. I am not going to name names.

I use a cheap deodorizer that I buy at Walmart. Once I empty the black water tank I add 2 oz. Of the stuff along with about 2 gallons of water. We have no smells. I also pour a a little down each sink and the shower drain. So far, so good. My parents don't add the deoderizer and they have the odor you refer to. Your call.

Exactly bozemanite. We add a bottle of the rv tank liquid at the beginning of each trip and never have even a trace of odor.

I too remember the 'camper' smell from my childhood camping trips in our old family motorhome.

Other than a faulty toilet bowl flush seal, I think the primary cause of odor is from having the bathroom exhaust fan on when the toilet is flushed. The fan can pull the stench right out of the black tank and into the bathroom.

I used a lot of chemicals and this stuff you get at walmart for 5 bux is the best I have used so far. Totally kills the strench. I also take a tank wand and rinse the tank out every trip to get rid of any nasty stuff on the walls and bottom of tank that did not drain out.

I've been using the packets vs. the liquid and it works really well. How does it compare in price? I bet the liquid is cheaper per dose.

One of the major reasons for odor is not emptying the tank frequently enough. Most say 5-7 days is the longest between dumps whether full or not, especially in the warmer weather.

Thanks everyone. All useful. Has anyone actually used a plug in fresher such as glade that plugs inri a socket? We use them at home and some include a night light which I find useful

I used the drop in's before and do work well.
I use that liquid stuff mainly because it it fast acting and does smell rather pleasant!

When we had our Heartland T/T I put cyclones on the vents on the roof, never had any smells. So when we got the Jayco did the same and don,t have any of the smells neither. The cyclones act like a vacuum and when the wind blows it sucks the smell up from the black tank. Well worth it in my opinion. Ernie

Hmmm will have to check that out,...what is a cyclone and where do you get them?

They sell them at camping world, in fact right now buy one get one free. Take off the top cover of the black tank and grey tank, these go on and they swivel, so when the wind blows it creates a vacuum effect and pulls the bad air out of the tank. Very easy to put on. It requires a drill and some sealant, they look like a wind vane sort of. they work for me. Ernie

I don't know if it's because I empty tanks frequently, because I use a Tornado tank flusher, or occasionally add the orange stuff discussed above, but I've never had any smells probably a combination of all three, but my money is on the tank flusher.
