Stolen Battery/Wire questions

Hello Everyone,

I had my battery stolen from my 2013 Jayco 19h. They cut the wires to remove the battery. I need to replace the eyelids but I have a question about one of the wires. I understand the green is the Positive cable, and the white is the Negative cable. Where did the black and orange wire come from? Its attached to the breakaway box but I don't remember it having a separate eyelid. Does it connect with the green cable to the positive?? Please help!!

Here are the pics.

Well - that just plain sucks. Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

On my 2015 195RB Baja the Orange/Black wire from the break-away switch is joined with the green positive wire at the positive terminal of the battery using the same eyelet. I've attached a picture for reference - I circled the connection in question in red. You can see the orange/black and green wires run together to the positive terminal. Hope your up and running again soon...

Sorry to hear about losing your batteries...

Not knowing your situation but alot of us folks that live in these high crime rate places have the batteries located in metal boxes with lever locks...

I tried to determine if your batteries were in front of the propane tanks or between the tanks and the trailer.

IMO the best spot for batteries in between the tanks and the trailer. This sort of hides the batteries from view but I guess everyone will know there will be batteries behind the tanks haha...

TORKLIFT makes a very nice slide on lid type metal box that is popular...

They also make one that comes with a solar panel to trickle charge your batteries with

google image

I guess there is really not much you can do to prevent the batteries from being stolen. Make it harder to do is probably the best thing you can come up with...

I'm thinking about using one of those truck bed 48-inch side mount metal boxes when I upgrade my batteries here... I have tons of room to work with here haha...

My batteries are still in the plastic boxes across the tongue of my POPUP trailer... I had four batteries here at one time but had one fail back in 2009.

I like the idea of motion sensor lights where the trailer is parked...

They also go after the propane tanks around here... The drug guys use them for something they tell me...

I am fortunate here to be able to park my trailers here at the house in the back yard... My lights all come on when anyone walks up back there...

Attach a separate wire end connector on the orange/black-breakaway switch wire and stack it with the main positive connector on the positive post.

Protecting your battery investment is really impossible, but the trick is to make it as difficult as possible for an easy rip-off. The thief will look for an easy take, less time needed to take your battery or LP tanks. If it was between a plastic battery case with a nylon strap opposed to a set of battery boxes secured someway, they will go for the easy one. Unless of course they do not mind spending more time dismantling your system.

I took an old towing chain, painted it, bolted it to one of the existing bolts on the frame and weaved it through the 2 battery boxes to secure them. A lock secures the chain. Granted, if they come in with cable cutters, all bets are off.

There is no slack at all in the chain.

You could use these on your battery boxes.

B & D RV Battery Lock For RV travel trailers and popup campers.

Might be worth the investment.

Added this to my wishlist. Looks like a really good option and inexpensive since we already have the plastic box.

I bought this after my battery was stolen, well worth the investment. I use a ratchet strap to secure the battery and the lock to keep it there!

They sell the 1.5" wide sheet metal strips with holes in them at the hardware store- the stuff they use to suspend plumbing etc. and it's dirt cheap. Wrap it around the battery box and bend the ends so you can put a padlock through. About $4 per battery box.

battery wires

Hi Closson 1;
Out battery was also stolen and we just a few minutes ago hooked the new one up. Yes the green and the black/orange were on the same eyelet before the battery was stolen but we just put the green one and black/orange one on separate eyelets.
We also got a heavy chain and lock.
Good luck.

Uh, Shamrock,

It sucks your battery was stolen.

This thread is two years old and Clossen hasn't been on the JOF for over a year.

I had a battery stolen once but I guess I should consider myself luck since the thief unscrewed the nuts holding the wires rather than cut them to make a quick escape with the battery.

After that incident I would removed the battery after every trip. Recently I formed a steel strap that wraps around the battery box and is secured with a padlock. Given enough time and the right tools it could be defeated but it's something to slow down a potential thief and maybe have them look for an easier target.
