Surge protector
Why do I need one?
What do they do?
What is the best one to get, if I determine I need one?

Throughout the campground people are constantly plugging in/out 30 or 50 amp plugs. It's common for electrical surges to happen which could damage electrical components of your trailer.

Plenty of talk here about surge protectors.

IMHO everyone should have one! I just installed a permanent one in my new Eagle from Progressive Industries. They have a lifetime warranty and are made in the USA! Right down the road in NC. I like the installed one better than the plug in type, because thats one less thing I have to carry and I don't have to worry about it disappearing. If you have one spike or reverse polarity, it will more than pay for itself. Everything in your RV that is electric has a circut board that can cost more than the protector.

I have the nice one from progressive too. Mine is the portable one, but I have it so that it locks in my bin when in use. I put two ends inline on my electrical plug, one short enough to allow my electrical system protection device to be connected, and then either my 25' or my 50' rv power cord to be connected to it. The cord feeds out the bottom of the bin through a port, and the door to it locks. They are pricy and with the red digital readout always on and showing, it attracts attention at night when hanging from the power pole in the RV park.
Camping World puts them on sale occasionally, and other places offer them at a reasonable price too.
Good luck.

progressive
We also have one of the Progressive units, a portable, in 30 amp. It does much more than just protect from power surges. If the power is other than ideal it won't let it pass. I've had a few instances where the rv would get no juice and the EMS would show an error of open ground or reverse ground etc.
The cost is comparable to replacing ONE of your appliances. If you decide on this, do some searching to find the best price.

Buy an electrical management system (EMS) that will also protect against low voltages. More expensive than a surge protector but worth it in my opionion. Progressive makes one as do other manufacturers.

I agree with sailor on the EMS.. I was the only one in one campground and when I turned on my A/C it caused the line to go low voltage. The entire CG was wired by the owner who did not know what he was doing.. if not for my EMS the A/C unit could have been damaged.. Think of an EMS as buying insurance.. Look at all the electronics in your RV that one good spike could blow.. YES I know you have an insurance policy to cover you for such events but think about the ruined vacation and how long your RV will be in the shop and you will be sitting at home...

I've had 2 units from Progressive, a 30A pole mount for the 23B and a 50A hard-wired one for the 5th. I think it's a good thing to have although I can't say that on "X" date something would have fried due to an electrical issue (surge, high/ low voltage ...).
If you have one and never have a problem is it thanks to the suppressor or just good luck? I'd rather have one and always wonder if it does any good than not have one and one day find myself saying, "If only I'd bought...".
I also think that when purchasing one it's not the best time to go cheap, I do that when buying TP and wine.
